Liberal Those who want some change, but want it legally.


Radical Those who want great change and they will do it illegally if necessary.


Conservative- Those in power, who want to keep power.


Domestic vs. Foreign matters The Tsars forced everyone living in Russia to speak Russian. Russia
wanted to expand toward the Ottoman Empire.


Autocratic one who holds absolute power.

Divine Right theory The King/Czar was given right to rule by God and the King/Czar answers to no
one on Earth.


Russification forced non-=Russian people in the empire to use the Russian language and accept the
orthodox religion.



Pan-Slavism The union of all Slavic people under Russian leadership.



Emancipation Edict This was what freed all of the serfs.


Peoples Will These radicals used terrorism-bombings and assassinations by political groups-to try to
force the government to grant their demands.

Nihilists They believed a society could be created only by abolishing the existing political, economic,
and social structures and building a completely new Russia.

a. Explain how liberalism affected Russias domestic policy.

Liberalism stopped or slowed Russias domestic policy because people were rebelling against the Russian
Government.


b. Describe two features of Russias foreign policy .

In the Balkans, Russia promoted Pan-Slavism, the union of all Slavic people under Russian Leadership.
Russia wanted to expand their land to the south towards the Ottoman Empire.

2. Organizing Ideas:
a. List the liberal reforms that Alexander II accomplished in Russia.

He freed the Serfs.
Allowed rural district to elect zemstvos
Made Russia more modern
Alexander also reformed the courts

b. What did he do with regard to the serfs?

He gave them more rights and freed them from being slaves.

3. Analyzing Ideas:
a. Why did the Revolution of 1905 fail to overthrow the monarchy?

The army remained loyal to the Czar.
The French helped the Russian Government.
Many of the Revolutionary groups were divided in their goals

b. How did Nicholas II respond to the Revolution of 1905?

He continued to treat the people the same way that they were being treated before.
