Dear Interviewee,
The students of Listening & Speaking II class were given an assignment to interview a foreigner. Rather than
just a short, simple yes and no answer type of interview, the assignment calls for a Ethnographic interview, so the
students will be asking deeper questions than usual and they expect answers that are longer than one sentence. The
purpose of this interview is two-fold.
First, students will be interviewing foreigners on a face-to-face basis, pushing them to interact with people
from other countries that they would usually not interact with without prodding. As most of these students are
majoring in education and plan on becoming teachers in the future, it is good for them to overcome any shyness and
see that foreigners are people just like them, and theres nothing to be afraid of.
Second, the students before you have chosen a specific topic on which most of their questions are based. The
reason that they are focusing on just one specific area is that they want to take a deeper look at the cultural
differences between Korea and other cultures around the world. Again, as most of these students are going to be
teachers, most of the questions will focus on education-related topics. Please be as specific as possible when
answering the questions, and dont be shy to give examples or tell stories. The students will be interviewing at least
two other foreigners on this topic and will be comparing your culture with the other cultures, as well as with Korean
culture. At the end of the semester, the students will be writing a personal reflection paper about the interviewing
process and their views on the comparison of cultures, as well as presenting a group presentation to the class, so that
other students may see how varied culture really is in the world.
