Sunrise and Sunset
1. Complete the following table
Natural periods of time Man made periods of time
Day Century
Night Week
Year Month
Lunar Months Decade

2. Describe how we demonstrated day and night?
With a ball, skewer and a light
3. What is the difference between a rotation and a revolution?
Rotation =Spin on earths axis
Revolution =Gone around sun
4. How long does it take to make
a. One rotation? A day
b. One revolution? A year
5. Why do we get day and night?
Because the earth rotates, we go from light to dark (day to night)
6. Insert a picture or diagram that shows day and night (you can use more
than one image)

7. Why does the sun rise in the east and set in the west
Its because the earth rotates on its axis
8. What is an Earth day? Do all planets have the say day length? Explain
your answer. An earth day is 24 hours, because of how fast it spins. No
they all have different day lengths.
9. What is an Earth Year? Do all planets have the same length years?
365 days, and no some go for like 7 Earth years
10. Research the following (you can choose which ones you wish to do first)
a. Who developed the 24 hour day? The Egyptians
b. Who developed the modern 365 day Calender? The Romans
c. Why does Easter and Eid fall on different dates each year.
Easter, is on the first full moon of spring
Eid, the end of the lunar month
d. Why do we need leap yeArs? To keep our modern calendar in line
with the rotation of the Earth.
e. What or who are the months of the year named after?
J anurary-J anus, god of begginings
Feburary-Febru-The feast of purification
March- Martius, Mars
April-Aphrodites
May-Maias
J une- J unos
J uly-J ulius caesears
August-Augustus
September- The seventh month
October-The eigth month
November- The nineth month
December-The tenth month
f. What or who are the days of the year named after?
Sunday-Suns day
Monday-Moons day
Tuesday-Tiws day
Wednesday-Wodens day
Thursday-Thors day
Friday-Friggs day
Saturday-Saturns day
The moon is drfiting away from the earth!
It moves 3.8cm every year and is estimatedto continue doing that for 50 billion years. Changing the
orbit around the earth from 27 to 47 days.
Only 12 people have been on the moon (All Americans)
They are Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Pete Conrad, Alan Bean, Alan Shepard, Edgar Mitchell, David
Scott, James Irwin, John Young, Charles Duke Jr., Jack Shmitt and Eugene Cernan.
During the 1950s NASA considered detonating a nuclear bomb on the moon!
It was a secret project called Project A119 during the cold war and they considered it because they
were lagging behind in the space race.
There are 8 phases of the moon!
They are New moon, Waxing crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full moon, Waning Gibbous,
Last quarter and Waning crescent.
There are earthquakes on the moon!
That is because of the gravitational pull of the earth. They occur several kilometers under the surface.
The moon was created when a rock the size of Mars banged into Earth.
This happened shortly after the forming of the universe 4.5 billion years ago.
The moon is not spherical, but is shaped like an egg!
So the centre of its mass is 1.2kilometers away from the centre of the moon.
In a survey 13% of the people thought that it was made of cheese

Phases of the moon
The moon
1. Why does the moon shine? Because the sun shines on it
2. How much of the moon is lit up at any time? Depends
on where the moon is
3. How many days does it take the moon to orbit the
Earth? 28 days
4. Why is the moon not a planet?
Because it is a satellite of the Earth
Phases of the moon
5. What is a full moon?
When all of one side of the moon is lit up
6. Why do we only see a full moon at night?
Because its too light during the day
7. What is a new moon? Why does it look like this?
When the moon is invisible
8. What is a half moon? Why do they look like this?
When half the moon of one side is lit up
9. What is a crescent moon?
When a 3
rd
of the moon is lit up
10. What is a gibbous moon?
When of the moon is lit up
11. What is meant by the moon is waxing?
Its growing
12. What is meant by the moon as waning?
Its shrinking
Research and insert diagrams to show the positions of the
Earth Sun and moon when:-
1. There is a full moon.

2. There is a new moon.

Extension
Use images to help your understanding of the questions
above.
A Lunar Attraction

1. What causes our tides
The moons gravitational pull!
2. How many high tides do you get each day?
2 High and 2 Low
3. What causes the Earths oceans to bulge?
The moon pulling it
4. Why do the oceans not get flung (thrown) completely off the
Earth?
Because its tug of war with the moon and earth
5. Explain what the diagram below is showing.

It is showing the tides and gravitational pull
6. What causes spring tides?
The moon and sun
7. What cause neap tides?
When the moon and the sun are pulling the tides in diff
directions
8. Why are the tides not the same time every day?
Because of the Earth spinning
9. If we did not have a moon would we get tides?
No

Solar and lunar eclipses
(6.5 Science quest 7)
Be able to explain why solar and lunar eclipses occur.

Lunar eclipse
1. What is a lunar eclipse? When the moon passes in the Earths shadow!
2. Using a diagram explain why a lunar eclipse occurs?

3. Why can the moon look red?
All the suns light is blocked by the sun except the lights from sunrises and sunsets
4. What are :- ?
5. Explain why a total lunar eclipse only occurs when there is a full moon?
Because it is when the whole moon is red not part

Solar eclipse
1. What is a solar eclipse? When the moon blocks the sun
2. Using a diagram explain why a solar eclipse occurs?

3. Why must you never look directly at a solar eclipse?
It will burn your eyes
4. What is the corona? And why can we not normally see it?
Because thats where the moon become invisible
5. Why does a solar eclipse only occur when there is a new moon?
Because it is where the shadow is facing the moon
6. Draw a table to compare a solar and lunar eclipse.

Research
1. Find images of lunar and solar eclipses.

2. Find the dates for the next solar and lunar eclipse
Total solar eclipse-20 March, 2015
Lunar Eclipse-4 April, 2015
3. What traditions around the world are linked to eclipses?
Scaring it off
Chasing it
Dragon ate the sun
