ABSTRACT

The experiment centers on density.

Displacement method and Archimedes principle
was conducted to determine the density of an
object and a substance. And based on their
densities, the composition of a substance was
determined. A cylinder was used to determine
the density of an alloy. The bone, which has an
irregular shape, was weighed in air and weighed
while dipped in water in order to get the relative
density. In the last activity, the comparison of
densities between a regular soft drink and a diet
one was observed.
APPLICATION
1. How can you distinguish Fools Gold from
pure gold?
The two can be distinguished based on
their densities. If we try to suspend the both in
water, fools gold tend to float while pure gold
will sink to the bottom because the density of
pure gold is around 19.3g/cc while that of fools
gold is only about 5.02g/cc.
2. The solid samples used in the experiment are
denser than water. How will you determine the
density of a solid that is less dense than water?
Explain the formula you will use.
First, put the solid in the water. Record
how much water is displaced by the floating
solid. Next, submerge the solid fully under the
water. Record again the water displaced.
Calculate the relative density by dividing the
density of the solid when it is floating by when it
is submerged in water. Since the density of
water is 1.00g/cc, then the relative density is
equivalent to the density of the solid itself.

3. The suitability of a person to donate blood
may be tested by placing a drop of his blood in a
saline solution of density 1.03g/cc. Is he a
suitable donor if the drop of blood sinks?
Explain your answer.
The normal density of blood is 1.06g/cc.
The density is close to the normal density of
blood, therefore the donor is suitable.
4. What is the meaning of the expression tip of
the iceberg? Is there a physical basis for this?
The expression tip of the iceberg is
used to refer to a situation in which you or
someone else is seeing only a portion of it. The
physical basis for this is that when you see
icebergs, you are only seeing a portion of its
entire body because the majority is submerged
underwater.
