More than 1.1 million people are internally
displaced
Islamist Militia and the UN backed Transitional
Government compete for control of the country.


Piracy
A major threat to shipping in the area
Three years ago, the pirates held more
than 700 crew members and 30 ships.
NATO mounted an anti-piracy operation .
Now only 40 people are still being held.
Pirates netted more than $400m (230m)
in ransom money between 2005 and 2012.


African Union (AU)

AU force mandated in January 2007
Supposed to be 22,000+ strong but only 17,000 troops
Predominantly Soldiers from Uganda, Ethiopia, Burundi and
Kenya
AU Force does not have the mandate
to pursue the insurgents.

Two VBIEDs approached

MIA entrance
Vehicle occupant wearing TFG

Upon reaching CP and being
challenged, VBIED#1 exploded
Occupants of VBIED#2
dismounted w/AK47 and attacked
the main gate.
As each attacker was shot they
exploded (they were wearing
suicide vests)
One PBIED attacker got within
100 m of MIA terminal building
