Principles of Prasna
A promissed writeup on some of the core principles of prasna analysis, including use of varga
charts and a timing tool from the Achyuta Gurukul. Definitely a must read for all astrologers.
Principles of Prashna: Download
Dear Visti ji
I have actually gone through your article already a couple of times and somehow I am not
really clear about the success and the timing part of the same.
I guess a few more examples on the same could clarify the case.
I give you an example of the prasna chart that I cast for a friend.
Prasna-108 (77)
The Lagna is in Ge and aspected by rasi drishti by exhalted Venus which is a good sign there
is graha drishti of rahu and that can show maybe some degree of dis-belief but the authenticity
of the prasna is not questionable.
The AL sits in libra which is the 5th house and the native had asked when will we have the

second child.
The native selected the number 77 and the number lagna sits in Sg as 77/9 =8 and 5. So add 1
to 8 and that makes it 9. Rasi 9th is Sg and that is the 7th house so the real cause of the prasna
is about some new relationship or resulting from his spouse. The navamsa however is the 5th
navamsa of Sg and that is Leo. This eludes me how to interpret that, 3rd house is house of sex,
sibling, and also initiative. so what can that represent.
dividing 77 by 12 it gives me 6 and 5. And that when rounded up represents 7. and remainder
is 5 and represents leo again. The 7th planet is Saturn, Counting from sg(number lagna) to Leo
it is 9 signs and count the same from sa and that is exhalted Venus in pi which is the 10th
house, So what does that show? That the travelling in his job has caused the native to ask this
question, It is true that me and my friend both are travelling a lot from the home country and
hardly at home, So can we interpret that the real cuase of the prasna was that the native was
apprehensive that due to his travel at work he may not be able to beget children soon?
Now this is as far as i could interpret. But if I have to give an answer to the native I dont know
how to do that. You mentioned the principles as
Lagna L aspects Lagna and Karyesh aspects karya Bhava, In this case Lagna is Ge and LL
mercury does not aspect by Rasi or garha drishti, (Q1: what aspect should be used for such
cases? in Your example you have used graha drishti, why not rasi? and what is the basis for
these rules?)
Also karyesha Ju does not aspect 5th house so answer is No.
Lagna Lord does aspects 5th house by rasi drishti and Ju does not aspect Lagna in any way so
No.
So what does that mean, the native cant beget children or are we talking of some timeframes
etc. Incase we need to give some remedies what approach can we adopt?

Dear Tarun, Namaskar.
You have to read the article much more closely. Based on the nature of the success we
can ascertain the timing as being within 1 year, 5 years or beyond 5 years. This is also
indicated in the article.
In the same article I have used predominantly Rasi dristi but in some cases also graha
dristi as graha dristi can arise in the form of a strong desire to attain something. Both

work but graha dristi requires more effort from the client.
In the prasna you have made Karaka-Jupiter does not associate with the fifth house nor
the lagna/lagnesha. Without such an association the answer is definitely negative.
However, Moon is placed in the fifth and does aspect the lagnesha. So if there is
supposed to be childbirth it must occur in a period beyond that of one year.
Now see the Jagannath Drekkana for timing. Here Guru-Shani is starting after June 2008
and Shani is the fifth lord. Unfortunately he is in the sixth house with the sixth lord, and
to confirm this issue we need to see their natal charts as this position doesn’t bode well
for childbirths. One saving grace is there in the form of exalted Venus which can bring
prematurely born children.
Respected Visti ji
Unfortunately, I have an issue with the natal chart of the native as he is born in finland and as
per jhora the ascendent does not change sign in the 21 hours before. I dont know if we could
use this chart. Here are the details

Respected Guru Ji
A quick look at the Vimsottari of the native seeded from the 4th star as it has 5 planets
indicates that he would run ju -mo from 2008 jan. Now Ju aspects the 12th from the sun so
plenty of resources in the Maha dasa. Moon is moon itself? How to analyse that for antardasa
(ref your vimsottari discussion). From the AL moon is somehow in the 7th so that means that
it will block the way for the persons arudha? Now appying your principle of the 2,5,9 from the
Antardasa there is A3, ul, a9 only and no a5.
Quick look at the native’s saptamsa reveals that there is 1st child given by Ju(Sg) and indeed a
girl. 2nd was a abortion/mis carraige Ra joins Ma(ret), 3rd is Ma joining the node Ra and that
can be a boy but Ceasarian section or even a miscarraige(what do you think?) and then it is the
node Ke though the next planet after that is Ju so a strong desire can lead to one more Ve
( joins Su) Boy.
I know that you have not taught Saptamsa as yet, but I read a few discussions and also from
the articles by Pt Sanjay Rath.

Respected Guru Ji
Its me again… Tried to apply the Vimsottari (from the 4th) to the D-7 also. Ju - Mo - Ke can
give a child if not atleast Ju-Mo-Ve as Ve lords the child. Ju aspects the 5th house of the native
and hence the child birth is possible, Mo aspects Ve which is the lord giving the child and Ke
joins the sign Ta and also Ve is the lord of the sign. So Do you think it would be safe to
predict that Ju-Mo-ke/Ve could give the child. Before that I dont really see a possibility
arising.

Just a quick question(s): where did you study prasna, with whom and for how long?
हरे राम कृ ण॥
Dear Sugriva, Namaskar
This is a leading question. Why do you ask?
I’m still studying Prasna as i am the other parts of Jyotish, and have done so over the
years which i have spent learning from Pt. Sanjay Rath.

Dear Vistiji,
Namaste! Sorry if I put u on the defensive. I am very interested in learning prasna. I was just
interested in your credentials since u were teaching us about this subject; just as u or anyone
else would inquire into the credentials of anyone who is teaching and by implication giving the
appearance of being an expert in the subject. Of course no matter how long we are involved in
jyotish or any other subject we remain students but of course some are senior, some junior and
some neophytes but I think you get my point.
U mention Pt. Sanjay Rath as your teacher of Prasna but Sri Rath is not known to be an expert
in this area so how u are learning from him? Or has Pt. Rath now become one?

he really seems to be expert in this with – if his bio is correct — over 25 years in the field of
Prasna.
Again please forgive me for asking what u thought was a leading question, I sincerely wanted
to know what your credentials were.
Best regards
Sugriva
हरे राम कृ ण॥
Dear Sugriva, Namaskar
In the tradition Prasna is not treated as a subject different from the analysis of the Janma
Jataka. In the same way I and my Gurubhai’s were taught. Of course some differences are
there between Prasna and Janma Jataka, but both are taught from the beginning and side-
by-side.
So Sanjayji has been learning and practicing Prasna as long as he has been practicing
Janma Jataka, and he is VERY good at it I must say.
In fact all Sanjays students are taught to conduct a prasna with every reading they
perform, and we do use the prasna as an integral part of the chart reading for the client.
You will see this revealed in this lecture: http://www.srigaruda.com/2007/04/22/example-
of-chart-analysis/langswitch_lang/wp
Hope this clarifies things.
Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

E.Krishna Prasad.
||Namah Shivaya||
Dear Krisna Prasad,
If I can briefly explain this:
1 Astrologer casts the prasna chart, at the time when he is able to answer the query,
irrespective of the time he received the query, whether by phone/email.
2. The chart data should reflect the astrologer’s location and not that of querist.
3. The planet is as per Vara, Sun=1, Moon=2, etc.
The rest is explained in the article which has been updated by Guru Visti, following our
discussion on the Sohamsa forum. If you read carefully, you will understand.
Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Sharat
