Student Teacher: Amalia Stratikopoulos Stage: S1 Lesson Duration: 1hr Lesson Number: 5

Outcomes & Indicators:

ST1-10LW: Describes external features, changes in and growth of living things
identifies and recongises different groups of animals - involving mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish and
insects.
classifies, categorises and organises the different animals into their animal groups.
describes some external features of living things - recording simple characteristics of each animal and their
group.
ST1-4WS: Investigates questions and predictions by collecting and recording data, sharing and reflecting on their
experiences and comparing what they and others know
working cooperatively and individually when participating in different types of guided investigations to explore
and answer questions, such as classifying data into appropriate categorises.
Key Scientific Knowledge:
Teachers should have prior knowledge and understanding of:
Living things what they comprise of, need and have in
comparison to non-living things (Legaspi & Staits, 2011).
Classifying the animal groups (mammals, reptiles, amphibians,
birds, fish and insects) and identifying specific characteristics
and types of organisms that belong to each group (Wilcox &
Sterling, 2008; Keeley, 2010).
Vertebrates and invertebrates and the animal groups that fall
under them; (Braund, 1997)
-vertebrates have a backbone: mammals, reptiles, amphibians,
birds and fish
-invertebrates dont have a backbone: insects
Amphibians means two-lives. They live both on land and in
water. Types are toads, frogs, salamanders (Braude, 2007).

MA1-17SP: Gathers and organises data, displays data in lists, tables and picture graphs, and interprets
the results
record a data display created from pictures
interpret information presented in data displays
Activity Title: Investigating different groups of animals (Living Things)
Lesson Sequence:
Introduction (10-15min):
*children revisits plant journals observe and record findings
teacher introduces the different animal groups using IWB
*children watch a video on classifying animals please see Weebly Website
*children classify, explore and investigate six animal groups: mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish and insects
teacher to provide examples on IWB and use hands-on plastic animals for children to manipulate
Body (30-40min):
teacher explains group activity to children
*in groups of 2 or 3 children need to identify, classify and group the animals into their classification group.
*each group will have a large A3 art paper, glue, scissors and variety of animal pictures please see Appendix Two
*children need to cut out and determine which classification group the animal belongs to and stick it in the appropriate section.
teacher note: beforehand, divided the A3 art paper into 6 sections, each section labelled with the animal group headings: mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds,
fish and insects
Conclusion (15-20min):
*class discussion children, with teacher, discuss and identify animals they had categorised in each animal group, also giving a specific reason why.
teacher to recap childrens knowledge and support their understanding of why certain animals are classified to be in their animal group:
E.g. a lion is a mammal because they has fur, give birth to young, are warm-blooded and breath air with lungs
teacher to recap and consolidate childrens learning using the Animal Classification tab please see Weebly Website
*children to then participate in the interactive online activity: animal classification game - also found on the web link above.
Please see Appendix One for Differentiation of all lessons
