OFFICE OF THE DEAN OF THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

October 26, 2014
Re: Dr. Kathryn Theuer, Promotion Support Letter

Review Committee,
I offer this letter of support as part of the promotion portfolio for your consideration for Dr.
Kathryn (Kathy) Theuer from Associate Professor to Professor from the vantage point of the
contributions that Dr. Theuer has made in the School of Education. I will provide a separate letter of my
formal recommendation as Dean of the School of Education after a comprehensive evaluation of Dr.
Theuers completed portfolio.
As a long standing member of the faculty and as an integral member of the School of Education,
it is difficult to find an individual who has impacted Brandmans School of Education more than Dr. Kathy
Theuer. She wears many hats of leadership in the School of Education and in the California Education
Community so I will briefly highlight some of the significant contributions that she has offered.
As Associate Dean she is a key curricular leader that I rely on to lead the Multiple Subjects/Single
Subjects/Master of Arts in Teaching Curriculum Team and in that capacity oversaw the development of
the blended and online course development, the integration of Common Core standards and teaching
methods in all credential courses, and development of the new synchronous meetings to better assess
candidate dispositions in credential courses. In addition, she led the complex development of new BA in
Liberal Studies integrated teaching track program with Dean Korr.
As the Director of Accreditation, Dr. Theuer has adeptly led the development of a state-of-the-
art assessment system that has not only received accolades from the CTC, but has allowed us to be a
NCATE (now CAEP) candidate which prior to my tenure as dean, many Chapman University College
leaders thought was not possible with our multicampus system and faculty design. In this capacity, she
led the development of curriculum maps, signature assignments, and consistent rubric development and
has led the development of the LiveText process for signature assignments, portfolios, TPAs, and
fieldwork. In addition to forming and overseeing the work of the Faculty Accreditation Writing Team,
she authored all of the CTC, NCATE and WASC reports with their input. Dr. Theuer also developed new
training materials and conducted numerous trainings for students, advisors, CCCs, faculty and University
Supervisors. As Director of Accreditation, she has led the vast majority of the faculty retreats and the
virtual faculty meetings over the past few years as the work for CTC/NCATE accreditation has been a
central focus for the School of Education.

Finally, Dr. Theuer is well regarded by our colleagues in the education community which is an
important component for promotion to Professor. Not only is she a member of the CTC Board of
Institutional Reviewers, a board member for ICCUCET (the private university teacher education
association for California), and one of the Brandman University representatives for the CA State Team
for the CEEDAR grant, but she was appointed as a member of CTC Teacher Preparation Advisory Panel
(TAP) as the AICCU representative which reviewed the content, structure and requirements for CA
teacher preparation and licensure to ensure that these remained responsive to the conditions of
teaching and learning in CA public schools.
Due to these significant contributions Dr. Theuer has made to the Brandman School of
Education and the education profession, I strongly support her candidacy for consideration for
promotion from Associate Professor to Professor.
Sincerely,

Dr. Christine G. Zeppos
Dean, School of Education
