techniques to treat musculoskeletal conditions, neurological conditions, and cardiothoracic conditions.
Benefits of TENS Therapy: treat muscle, joint, or bone problems that occur with illnesses such as osteoarthritis or fibromyalgia used for conditions such as low back pain, neck pain, tendinitis, or bursitis treat sudden (acute) pain, such as labor pain assist with long-lasting (chronic) pain, such as cancer pain relieve pain from migraines and headaches used for injuries and wounds Benefits of Ultrasound: Break up scar tissue and adhesions Reduce inflammation, swelling and calcium deposits Create a deep heat to ease muscle spasms Increase soft tissue extensibility prior to stretching and exercise Facilitate healing at the cellular level Speeds metabolism and improves blood flow Reduces nerve root irritation Speeds bone healing

Therapeutic Ultrasound
How It Works:
Ultrasound is a method of stimulating the tissue beneath the skin's surface using very high frequency sound waves which cannot be heard by humans.
Ultrasound is applied using a transducer or applicator that is in direct contact with the patient's skin. Gel is used on all surfaces of the head to reduce friction and assist transmission of the ultrasonic waves.
The sound waves that pass through the skin cause a vibration of the tissues. This vibration can cause a deep heating in which the patient may feel some warmth. In situations where a heating effect is not desirable, such as a fresh injury with acute inflammation, the ultrasound can be pulsed rather than continuously transmitted.
A typical ultrasound treatment will take from 3-5 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. In cases where scar tissue breakdown is the goal, this treatment time can be much longer. During the treatment the head of the ultrasound probe is kept in constant motion.

TENS: Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation
How It Works: In TENS therapy, electrodes are placed on the skin, either directly over the painful area or more commonly, at key points along the nerve pathway. A low voltage electrical current is used to stimulate the nerves in the body for therapeutic purposes. TENS may modulate or suppress pain signals in the brain or cause the body to produce natural painkillers called endorphins which block the perception of pain. Patients feel a tingling sensation during treatment which should be strong but not painful or uncomfortable. The currents coming from a TENS unit can be turned up or down, ranging from 10Hz to 50Hz. The duration of a TENS session varies depending on settings and goal of treatment.
The aim of physiotherapy is to help restore movement and normal body function in cases of illness, injury and disability. When NOT to use Ultrasound: on areas considered to be malignant over infected areas or blood clot caution over growth plates in children near or over pacemakers on broken skin or growths on eyes and mouth
When NOT to use TENS: over the trunk, abdomen or pelvis during pregnancy by those with pacemakers over front of the neck by those with difficulty following instructions (ie. young children)
Always consult with a regulated health professional before usage of these modalities, or if you have any further questions
