ClassroomManagementPlan

Thefollowingclassroommanagementplandetailsmyphilosophyoneducation,rulesand
expectationsfortheclassroom,preventativemeasuresIwilltake,andconsequenceswhen
studentsarenotfollowingtheserulesandexpectations.Iwillusethisplanasaguide
throughouttheyeartohelpmakedecisions,guidelessons,andworkwithstudents.

ClassroomPhilosophy

Myphilosophyoneducationisbasedcloselyrelatedtoseveraltheoriesofcognitive
developmentandmotivation.Ibelievethatourschoolsshouldprovideaplaceand
directionforlearning.Wearechallengedtohelpstudentsacquirethetoolsandtechniques
theywillneedtoexcelinsocietyandtheirpersonallives.Ibelievethatmorethanequations
mathshouldstrengthenastudentslogicandcriticalthinkingskills.Oneofthegreatest
strengthsmathhasisitsabilitytoreduceproblemstopreviouslysolvedproblems.Todo
thisstudentsmustunderstandtheheartofquestionsandwhytheyaredoingwhattheyare
doingratherthanmemorizingdisconnectedtricks.Ibelieveaclassroomneedstobea
safeplacetolearnandtomakeproductivemistakes.Itisourresponsibilityaseducatorsto
useresearchavailabletoincreasethelearningofaclassroom.
Ibelievebehavioristtechniquescanbeusedtoguidethebehaviorsofthoseinthe
classroomtohelpallhaveapositivelearningenvironment.Ialsobelievethattherewards
andpunishmentsthatIprovidearenottheonlyfactorsmotivatingthestudents.Itis
importanttounderstandwhatismotivatingthestudentsbehaviorbothpositiveand
negative.Byunderstandingwhyastudentisactingoutornotparticipatingitcanbe
possibletocorrecttheproblemswiththebehaviorwithoutdirectpunishment,whichcan
furtheralienateastudent.Itisalsoimportanttothinkaboutwhatismotivatingastudent
whentheyaredoingwellandlearningeffectivelysothatwecanusethatmomentum
effectivelyandcontinuetosupporttheselearners.
BytreatingstudentswithrespectandauthenticityIwillbeabletoconnectandbetter
communicatewiththem.Evenwithconnectionstostudentstherewillstillbeunpredicted
complicationsandproblems.Therewillbeasetofrulesandexpectationsforthe
classroom.Therewillalsobepreventativemeasurestocontinuallyhelpguidethe
classroom.

SchoolPolicies

Myclassroomrulesandexpectationswillnotconflictwiththepoliciessetbytheschool.The
rulesandexpectationsofmyclassroomarenotintendedtobeaseparatesetfromthe
schoolpolicies,ratherintendedtocomplimentthem.

PreventativeMeasures

DisplayRules:Rulesandexpectationsshallbedisplayedatstudenteyelevel.Itis
unfairandunrealistictoexpectstudentstofollowrulestheydonotknow,orhave
forgotten.
RespectEveryone:Showrespecttostudents,otherstaff,parents,andanyone
elsewithwhomyouinteract.Evenifyouarethemostproficientpersonontheplanet
inyoursubjectarea,ifyouarenotrespectfultootherstheywillnotwanttolearnfrom
you.Byshowingrespecttoothersyoudemonstrateyourhighexpectationsofthem
andencouragethemtogiveyourespectandproduceresults.
MaintainAuthenticity:Partofshowingrespectisbeingauthentic.Whenthe
studentsthinkyoumaylietothemortrytotrickthem,theywillstoplisteningtoyou.
Anotherpartofbeingauthenticisnotteachingthingsthatareonlysometimestrue
justbecauseitisconvenientinthemoment.Ifyouhavethestudentstrustyoucannot

EncourageParticipation:Participationbothquestionsandanswersshouldbe
praised.Thestudentsarethereasonforourinstructionnotaninterruptionofit.As
studentsbecomemorecomfortableparticipatingandaskingquestionstheywill
growmorecomfortableformingconjecturesandtestingouttheoriesasagroup.
ConstantVariety:Ifeveryclassistaughtinthesamewayitwilledgecuriosityout
oftheclassroom.Everyonelearnsindifferentwayssowemuchvaryhowweteach
toincludeeveryone.Thisdoesnotmeanchangeeverythingdailybutbeingflexible
inlessonplanningandexecution.Makethelessonsfitthestudents,nottheother
wayaround.

ClassroomRules

Studentswillbeaskedtowritedownalistofrulestheythinkwouldbehelpfulinkeepingthe
classontrackforlearning.Theseruleswillbegatheredtogetherandcombinedtomakea
shortermoreeasilyrememberedlist.Iftherearetoomanyrulesthestudentswillignoreall
ofthem.Thegoalnumberwillbe4rulestoremember.Besuretonotethattheschoolrules
stillapply.Anexampleof4oftherulesthatwilllikelyappearareasfollows.Theseruleswill
beupdatedastheclasscreatesthembutshouldfollowthesethemes.

BeRespectful:Donotsaymeanthingsorbullyothers.Respectthe
personalspaceofothers.Listenwhileothersarespeakingandstayquietso
thatotherscanhearthemtoo.Raiseyouhandtosignalyouwanttosay
something.
Try:Whetheralone,inpartners,ingroups,orasawholeclassyouare
expectedtoputforthyourbesteffort.Askquestionswhenyouhavethemand
helpotherswhenyouknowtheanswer.Notunderstandingsomethingcan
happen,givingupcannothappen.
BeResponsible:Showupontime.Ifyoudidntbringtherequiredmaterials
toclassex:pencil,thensolvethisproblembeforeitisanissue.Donotwait
untilthemiddleofalessontostopeveryoneandaskforapencil.Complete
yourhomeworkathome.Whenyoumissadayberesponsibleforfindingout
whatyoumissedandwhatyoucandoaboutit.Ifyouhavelateworktoturnin,
remembertoturnitin!
StayonTask:Weareheretolearnandtohelpeachotherlearn.Stay
focusedonthelesson.Donotgetdistractedbyphones,music,etc.Donot
distractothersfromstayingontask.

Consequences

Evenwhentherulesareclearandagreeduponandpreventativemeasuresaretaken,
problemswillstilloccur.Studentswillneedremindersandconsequencestogoalongwith
therulesandexpectations.Thefirsttimearuleisbrokentherewillbeawarningor
reminderoftherule.Thesecondtimearuleisbrokenthestudentwillfilloutaformdetailing
whatrulewasbroken,whythatruleisimportant,howtheybrokethatrule,andhowtheywill
changetheirbehaviorinthefuturetoavoidbreakingthisrule.Thethirdtimearuleis
brokenthestudentwilljointheteacherforlunchtodiscusstherulesandwhatchangescan
bemadetomaketheclassroomalearningenvironmentforall.Afterthatthirdpartieswill
beinvolvedsuchastheprincipalorparents.Consequencesforbreakingschoolwiderules
willfollowthepoliciessetbytheschool.

ClassroomContract

Anotewillbesenthomeexplainingthemanagementplan,rules,expectations,
consequencesandthemotivationsbehindthese.Bothstudentsandparentswillbeasked
tosignthisshowingtheirunderstanding.
