Teachers addition

Enduring Understanding:
1. Using common denominators
2. Using common numerators
3. To be able to visualize a fraction
4. Know when to apply addition or subtract with a fraction to solve for the right
answer
5. Can use fractions in real life situations
6. Can apply addition and/or subtraction of fractions in real life problems
7. Can simply a fraction
An Enduring Understanding: addition and/or subtraction
Common Core:
Grade 5
Number & OperationsFractions
5.NF
Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions.
1. Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers)
by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an
equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 +
5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.)
2. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to
the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction
models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and
number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of
answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that
3/7 < 1/2.
Math practices:
5. Use appropriate tools strategically
Essential Question:
How can our knowledge of addition and subtraction of fractions help us to solve real
world problems?
Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to add and subtract like and unlike fractions with great
application.
Students will be able to apply their knowledge of addition and subtraction of
fractions into real life situations.

2. Communication and Collaboration
Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work
collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and
contribute to the learning of others.
4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making
Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects,
solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and
resources.
Grasps:
Goal: Students are expected to gain knowledge, practice and understanding of how
to add and subtract fractions. They will be able to show theyre deeper
understanding through their application and understanding with their project
presentation.
Role: Students will act as a spy investigator, one that must become so
knowledgeable on adding and subtracting fractions that they will be able to crack
the code.
Audience: All students will act as an audience for their peer group presentations.
The students role is to impress the audience with their great fraction skills and
knowledge that answers the mission.
Situation: Students will act as researchers, and learners to explore the concepts
behind adding and subtracting fractions. They will then come to find the problem
solution to the mission question they must break.
Product, Performance or Purpose: The students will produce a paper copy of their
research work questions. They will then produce a solution to the problem they are
expected to answer. Then lastly they will present their findings to the class audience
and blog a reflective journal on the website. Students will perform their skills
through the learning on the web quest; they will also need to present their
knowledge in a PowerPoint presentation. The purpose is to help deepen the
students understanding of addition and subtraction of fractions. They will be able to
think more critically and go from understanding the simple procedure of adding and
subtracting fractions to then knowing when to apply addition or subtraction. And
then finally students will understand when and how to relate addition and
subtraction of fractions into real life.

Standards/Criteria for success:

Students must score at least a check mark in the last four columns of the student
checklist.
A student must a 21 or higher to be considered passing or acceptable on the
problem solution rubric.
Students must score an 18 or higher to be considered passing or acceptable.
Students must have the presentation blogged on the weebly.
And students must blog their personal reflection on the blog page.
Must have completed at least problems for two of the website worksheets with
shown work.
