Kingdom Plant

What are some important

characteristics of plants?

1.
2.
3.
4.

All are eukaryotic (has a nucleus.)

All are autotrophic. (producer)
Cell wall is made of cellulose
Multicellular

What does a plant cell have the an

animal cell does not?
Reminder!!!
Nucleus
Cell wall

Vacuole
Chloroplast

1. A plant cell has

chloroplast. The green
stuff that helps it make
food.
2. A plant cell has a
larger vacuole to hold
water.
3. A plant cell has a
cell wall of cellulose.

What are some similarities

between a plant and animal cell?
1. Both cells are
eukaryotic.
2. Both cells have cell
membranes.
3. Both cells have
cytoplasm.

Here is what a plant cell looks

like under a microscope.

What is the function on a leaf?

Leaves are used to trap the energy from the
sun and make food through a process called
photosynthesis.

Lets review photosynthesis?

What gas does photosynthesis

need?
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
from animals.
It releases oxygen (O )
as its waste gas and
that is exactly what we
need!
2

There are two different layers on

the outside of the plant cell.
1. Epidermis: Outer

layers of the leaf.

Epi = outer

dermis = skin
2. The waxy cuticle
protects the plant from
loosing too much
water.

What is the function of the stoma

and guard cells?
1. The stoma are
pores in the leaf that
allow the gases
oxygen and carbon
dioxide the enter and
exit the leaf.
2. The guard cells
are specialized cells
that open and close
the stoma.

There are 2 different layers inside

the leaf.
1. The palisade layer
is packed with
chloroplast. Most of
the plants food is
made here!
2. The spongy layer is
loosely packed and
this layer is made up
of air sacs where gases
are exchanged.

Label the cross section of a leaf.

What is the function of the

vascular bundle (vein)?

Includes
Xylem &
Phloem

Carries water
Carries food

This is how water and air enters and

exits the leaf.

What is the function of a flower?

The flowers main function is to smell nice
and look nice. Why?
*Attract insects for pollination or

(reproduction)
Does pollen ever make
you feel like this?

Label the parts of the flower.

This is what happens when sperm

is introduced! Fertilization!!

What exactly is pollen?

Pollen is simply
male sperm from a
plant. It carries the
genetic information
of the plant.

What is an ovary?
An ovary carries
the female part or
egg. When it
combines with the
pollen (sperm) it
forms a seed.

These are the functions

Here are some real flowers with

parts labeled.

Insects help plants move pollen

from place to place.

Flowers can also self pollinate.
