STEM labs and childrens engineering labs

are being put in place in schools across the
country. River Bend Elementary School
has established its own STEM Lab in room
G49. In our STEM Lab, we plan to provide
hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build
and invent as they engage
in learning science, math,
social studies, technology
and language arts.

The Virginia Childrens Engineering

Council (VCEC) is dedicated to developing design and technology instructional material, and providing local, regional and statewide inservice opportunities for educators at grades K-5. The
inservice programs help teachers ensure that children develop an understanding of how to use, create, control,
and assess technology. These instructional experiences are provided in a design, critical thinking, and problem solving context. They undergird attainment
of selected Standards of Learning in
English, mathematics, science, and history and social science.

What is STEM?
STEM is an acronym for Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math
education. We focus on these areas
together not only because the skills
and knowledge in each area are essential for student success, but also
because these areas are intertwined in
the real world and in how students
learn most effectively. STEM is an
applied approach that allows students
to be involved with with hands-on,
problem-based learning.

Education at all levels in science,

technology, engineering, and mathematics - STEM - develops, preserves, and disseminates knowledge
and skills that convey personal, economic, and social benefits. Higher
education provides the advanced
work skills needed in an increasingly
knowledge-intensive,
innovationfocused economy and society.

STEM at River Bend

Throughout the school year, RBES students will be designing and creating various structures and products through Childrens Engineering. Our STEM lab is in
need of STUFF! Please do no feel the
need to purchase any items. In this pamphlet are lists of scrounge items (items
that are found readily around the house).
These items are just suggestions, and
anything you can save to recycle, reuse,
or to repurpose is greatly appreciated!
