Extended Written Response Assessment for High School American Literature

Unit 5: Disillusion, Defiance, and Discontent


Statement of Purpose: This formative assessment is to monitor student understanding
of character development and the function of major and minor characters in their
reading and analysis of Zora Neale Hurstons Dust Tracks on the Road. There are 100
points possible on this assessment. Students are permitted and encouraged to use their
previous Selected Written Response Assessment and the text as a resource for this
assessment.

This assessment contains 2 Short Essay Questions, each worth 50 points.

Objective: This assessment is to monitor your understanding of character
development and the function of major and minor characters in your reading and
analysis of Dust Tracks on the Road by Zora Neale Hurston. Once completed, this
assessment will be re-graded and returned to you.
It is important for me to know how confident you are about your answers. After
each question check sure if you are sure your answer is correct or unsure if you are
hesitant about your answer.
Once you complete your written responses, evaluate your writing using the grading
rubric.
Once you are finished with the assessment, turn it face down on your desk, open
your book to page 925 and begin reading Poetry by Langston Hughes and Claude McKay.
