The main key learning areas which are integrated throughout this unit are in English and

mathematics.
English is covered in this unit mainly through communication areas. These lessons are designed as
group work, so therefore communication is key to the students completing these successfully.
Students also need to be have effective communication with the classroom teacher throughout the
experiences. Many of the lessons involve group discussion and brainstorming which means that the
students need to be able to be involved in group time and understand the conventions surrounding
large group discussions. It is also important for students to be able to compose their own texts and
interpret these texts effectively. Some of the lessons also involve the students creating their own
experiments and recording what happens throughout the experiment, therefore it is important for
the students to be able to effectively design and record data.
Mathematics is an important key learning are when completing science experiments. Given the
nature of the unit (kitchen chemistry) most of the lessons include measurement in some way, shape
or form. It is important for the students to be able to measure the different ingredients, using
different containers of measurement (measuring cups, measuring spoons for example) and adapt
these as needed. Some of the lessons require a specific unit of measurement for the ingredients,
however the nature of science encourages students to experiment until they work out what works
for themselves. This is where the mathematics comes in as the students determine the correct
quantities.
