Modelling and simulation of aircraft nose wheel steering using cosimulation method

Abstract
Intention The intention is to bring in a co-simulation method to study the aircraft nose
wheel steering and thus, to progressively increase the reliability and safety levels of the
aeroplane ground steering system.
Design/methodology/approach A virtual prototype of aircraft is established in the CATIA.
The established block diagrams of hydraulic system of nose wheel steering is connected to
the model, so that the aircraft steering is simulated .
Keywords Aircraft, Steering gear, Prototypes, Simulation, Computer software.

Introduction
The steering system is a classic machine-hydraulic servo system ,while the manipulation
mechanism moves, the nose wheel follows steering and stops at subsequent location when the
manipulation mechanism stops. Once the steering system breaks, the stability distance of
nose wheel keeps the aircraft taxiing along a straight line and the shimmy damper prevents
nose wheel shimmy. The steering system consists two manipulation modes: hand
manipulation ,used for aircraft taxiing and wide-angle turning in low speed and rudder pedal
manipulation ,used to regulate aircraft heading at the course of taking-off and landing.
The steering system considered in this work is for the second mode. The differential device
transmits the steering signal to the rudder pedal manipulation control valve, which is used to
steer the nose wheel, in chorus, feedback signals of wheel steering, such as steer angle and
angular velocity, are transmitted to the differential device to control the manipulation control
valve. The rudder pedal manipulation control valve is a hydraulic control valve of sliding
valve, which control the flow direction and amount of pressure oil supplied for actuating
cylinder to drive the wheel.
