Totalitarianism under Stalin

1. Define the term totalitarianism a government that takes total, centralized and state control over everyone
including their public lives and their private lives.

2. While reading the excerpt, create a list of methods of control used by Soviet leaders and examples of all
the methods of control, which allows the MOST long-term control?

Police state

Built a police state to maintain his power. They were


much stocked with weapons and vehicles including
tanks to stop riots.

Great purge
Killed about 8-13 million people because of them
rebelling against his power.
Russian Propaganda and censorship
Spread propaganda about art and about their beliefs
about atheism and want people to converge to atheism.
Education and indoctrination
Government controlled all education from nursery
schools to universities.
3. Stalins methods of control.
a. What was the Great Purge? How would Stalins use of this action increase his power?
The great purge was when anyone who threatened his power would be killed. After it was over, he gained total
control of the soviet government and the communist party. Since the great purge happened, this led him to this.
b. What was Pravda? How did Stalin explain the purpose of art in the USSR?
Pravda was the communist partys newspaper. Stalin says the purpose of art is used for propaganda.

c. What is an atheism? How did Stalin use atheism to influence his control over his citizens?
Atheism is not believing in any religion. Stalin, the government and league of militant goddess were atheist.
Spread propaganda about attacking religion and had police destroy churches and synagogues and religious leaders
were killed or sent to labor camps.
4. Stalins control over the economy.
a. What is a command economy? A System of government where they make all economic decisions.
b. Stalins Five Year Plans
1. Purpose increase the output of steel, coal, oil and electricity.

2. Results people faced shortage of housing, food, clothing and other important things.

c. What methods did Stalin use to bring agriculture under state control?
Took control over 25 million farms and made them large government owned farms named collective farms. A lot
of families worked on these farm getting food and other things for the state.

d. Kulaks a class of wealthy peasants

1. How did they create a problem for Stalin?


They fought the governments attempt to take their land.

2. How did he solve the problem?


He had them all eliminated.
