In order to maximize the use of the

space, the decision was made to change the
afterschool program at Von King to a drop-in
program. Enrollment in afterschool at Von
King averaged about 8 children a day. In its
new format, the single service program will
focus on a different theme each day, including academics and arts, said Parks Department spokesperson Meghan Lalor.
Recreation Center sources said it was
the decertification that led to a drop in the
number of students who utilize the center.
In particular the loss of homework help and
more limited use of the computer lab has
led many parents who have their children in
charter schools to look for other after school
programs, sources said.

he Herbert Von King Park Recreation Center has seen their longtime
after school program decertified,
sparking fears among parents and workers
alike that the self-empowerment center may
face layoffs or have services contracted out
to a non-profit organization with no ties to
the community.
The center houses one of the best infrastructures in the city for the performing arts
with a full indoor stage and outdoor amphitheater. Additionally local artisans and non-profit
organizations in such varied fields as ceramics
and the martial arts often engage the many local youth between the ages of 6-13 that have
been utilizing the space for generations as a
true community center.

They changed the scope of the program from a regular certified after school
program to what is a drop in program
where they are not allowed to assist kids
with home work anymore and can only do
one activity per day, said one irate parent
source.
The changes made quietly occurred in
August when the States Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) decertified Von Kings free School Aged Child
Care (SACC) Program. The program has
been in operation at the center since November 2006.
At the same time, the citys Parks Department, which manages the recreation
center cut the hours from 10 am to 8 pm
Monday through Saturday to 10 am to 6 pm
Tuesday through Saturday.

Bed-Stuy Volunteer
Ambulance Corps Screening
Calls in Wake of Ebola

By Mary Alice Miller

ocky Robinson was among the

500 who recently marched to the
United Nations to raise awareness about Ebola. Robinson, who founded the Bedford-Stuyvesant Volunteer
Ambulance Corps, said his reason for
participating was simple. I explained
to the people that Ebola is not airborne;
it is a blood-born pathogen. You wont
be infected just because you are in the
same room with them, said Robinson.
We have to realize that Ebola has been
around 13-14 years. The problem is it
has never reached America before. Now
that it is starting to spread, now people
are starting to take notice of it. We need
to make the public know that it is not
new but we have to stop it at its source.
According to Robinson, there is a lot
of work to be done. The public needs
to know what to do in case they suspect that they have come in contact with
somebody, said Robinson. But it is not
like if you live on the next block or the
same block that you are going to get the
disease.
From Day 1 when the United States
had its first Ebola patient in Texas,
Robinson made sure his volunteer
corps went through the drills with
gloves, gowns and goggles. We have
to train the people on EMS that they
have to be conscious of people who
have flu-like symptoms. They have

to know the difference between an

airborne pathogen and a blood-born
pathogen, said Robinson. If we suspect somebody (even with the flu) we
have to wear our mask and put on our
gloves and make sure we decontaminate our unit after each call.
Robinson advises all of his EMT
volunteers to use their blue gloves
and face masks any time they go on
sick calls. I am sorry if the public is
offended, but we have to use precautions, said Robinson. If you go on a
call where there is blood you dont
know. Its better safe than sorry.
Robinson is having his instructors
trained in order to be better prepared
if there is any outbreak not only in our
neighborhood, but in the city. We have
to teach them the signs, symptoms, protection, sterilization, decontamination,
all of the things we take for granted. We
have to make sure that our vehicles and
our people are really protected because
we are the first line, he said. We cannot afford to be lax or make any type of
mistake when we are dealing with patients.
The Bedford-Stuyvesant Volunteer
Ambulance Corps has begun screening calls that they attend because they
do not have enough proper equipment.
We have to get equipment like protective gear and disinfecting products any
way we can through donations. There

Stuy EMS, even though we run just as

much as New York Citys EMS, but without the funding, said Robinson. This is
what the problem is. Our certification is
equivalent but our resources are not. That
creates a problem for us. The community
suffers because we cant respond to the
calls that we want to respond to because
we dont have the necessary equipment
right now.
New York City EMS had two levels of
units: the basic ambulance we are all familiar with, and dedicated hazmat units
stationed all across the city, including
central Brooklyn. When the basic unit
goes out on a call it takes preliminary
precautions and assesses the situation.
If there is a suspicion that they are encountering an Ebola-like situation, they
are required to extract themselves from
the situation and call a hazmat unit. The
hazmat unit is equipped with all the necessary protective equipment to protect
EMS paramedics while they attend to
the patient.

State sources noted the closing of this

and enforcement activities) for all child care
programs, and the city Human Resources
Agency (HRA) determines subsidy eligibility.

Robinsons EMS volunteers go through

training for blood-born pathogens, protective gear and body substance isolation.
Sometimes we would wear our gloves,
sometimes not, said Robinson. Now this
is very critical. We cant do that anymore
until we contain this virus.
Although Robinson is screening
calls, he said he is not going to let a kid
be out there struck by a car and just because he is bleeding and not be attended. They continue to do street calls like
gunshot victims. But house calls with
flu-like symptoms, I cant let them do
that yet, said Robinson.
Robinson needs the public to know
that the Bedford-Stuyvesant Volunteer
Ambulance Corps needs resources. I
am not crying for money for our volunteers. I am crying for resources: protective gear and the necessities so that we
are able to help the city (as the EMS)
like we have done for years, said Robinson. We are first responders without
borders. We need help.

The Citys Parks Department defended

the move saying there werent enough kids
in the after school program to justify its continued existence.
In the meantime both parents and workers have been complaining about the situation to City Councilman Robert Cornegy.
Cornegy said he is aware of the situation
and working on resolving any problems,
but reserved comment until he meets with
Brooklyn Borough Parks Commissioner
Kevin Jeffrey.
Cornegy said he has already set up a
meeting with Jeffrey in less than two weeks.
Lalor added. We have a project in design to
reconstruct the multipurpose room at the Center.
Parks Department sources said there are
no plans to change management or staffing
levels at this center.

but the jury is out, said Jeffries.

Both Banks and Pineiro were well-respected law enforcement officers, who
had vast community policing experience, and both reportedly resigned because they were offered promotions that
didnt carry with it real decision making
power or jurisdiction.
The resignations came at a time when
both marijuana arrests and quality of life
arrest disproportionately targets people
of color in the city. The elected black
and Hispanic leadership also wants the
NYPD to tone down the Broken Window theory behind policing that holds
if you crack down on quality of life
crimes, it will keep major crime down.
Protecting and respecting our community are not mutually exclusive, said
Assembly member Karim Camara at a
press conference called on the steps of

city hall to protest the lack of meaningful diversity in the NYPDs upper ranks.
You can protect our community and respect our community.
Other Central Brooklyn elected at the
press conference included City Council
members Jumaane Williams and Robert
Cornegy, and Assembly member Walter
Mosley all of whom said they expect
the de Blasio Administration to make
good on his promise to improve relations between police and the communities they patrol.
The political leaders were also
joined by advocacy groups including
Charles Billups, President of the Grand
Council of Guardians; Anthony Miranda, President of the National Latino Officers Association who represent black and Hispanic officers in the
NYPD.
Billups said at the press conference
that Banks was a respected police officer with deep ties to the community, and
that whoever replaces him should have
the same type of fair but tough record.
Banks also had a good reputation
on the local level with individual police
community councils, according to James
Caldwell, a respected Crown Heights
Community activist and longtime president of the 77th Precinct Community
Council.
I was sad to hear about his resignation, said Caldwell. Im very fond of
him. Banks stood his ground but he liked
working with all the communities. The
fact he stood his ground is good and I
hope whoever comes in as his replacement has real power.
Caldwell also took Bratton to task
for not meeting with the local community councils. No one from the top brass
has met the little people yet. Thats not
good.
The controversy comes as the NYPD
remains working without a contact
and police sources say moral among
the rank-and-file police that patrol the
streets is very low.
You need someone who understands
the issues in the community, said the
police source. He (Bratton) is not looking for people that are qualified to be
promoted at the top level, hes looking
for someone he can control.

But if only we had George W. Bush back,

the electorate seemed to be saying last night!
If only we could have had McCain/Palin
these last six years instead of Obama/Biden!
If only we could have Mitch McConnell and
John Boehner running everything, not just
Congress!
It makes no sense to me, but neither does
putting a climate change denier in charge of
the House Space and Technology committee
(and now, very possibly, another in charge of
the Senate Environment Committee -- see his
book calling climate change a "conspiracy").
So last night was horrible, and further
retards what could otherwise actually be a
terrific time for our country (which is already
enjoying better economic times than almost
any other).
So many of my friends think the whole
process stinks and just wish the two parties
could be moderate and sensible and straighttalking and all the rest.
So do I.
But as I've argued before, it's not
equivalent. Their moderates get primaried out by uncompromising extremists; ours do not. As a result, their
remaining moderates are rightly afraid
of a Koch-financed primary, and so refuse to compromise. Our moderates
have no reason to fear a primary, so
do not fear compromise. Huge difference.

Ralph Nader gave us the president

who gave us the Court that rendered
decisions like Citizens United and McCutcheon and gutted the Voting Rights
Act, giving the Kochs et al even more
power to swing elections their way -and perhaps tighten their grip still further.
So winning in 2016 will not be easy.
Which is why I plan to go to the
movies for a couple of days and then
get back to asking folks for support.
After 5 billion years leading up to
this geological nanosecond, our ridiculous but miraculous little species -- 7.2
billion passengers on an all but infinitesimal speck of a spaceship -- have
just a few decades to get on a sustainable trajectory. If we do, we're on the
cusp of all but unimaginable well-being. If we don't, were on the brink of
disaster.
So it matters, and it's interesting,
and it amazes me how many people
only care which candidate they'd rather
have a beer with. Or who don't even
vote at all.
If youre like most on this list,
your support has been amazing. It
didnt pay off as we hoped last night.
But it sure paid off in 2006 and 2008
and 2012 and will again, I believe, in
2o16.

Bratton Names Ben Tucker First Deputy

Commissioner of the NYPD

By Stephen Witt

ollowing several days of the

citys black and Hispanic elected
leadership lambasting both the
de Blasio Administration and the NYPD
for not having meaningful leadership at
the top level, NYPD Commissioner William Bratton Wednesday appointed Ben
Tucker as First Deputy Commissioner of
the NYPD.
The appointment comes less than
a week after the NYPDs top African-American cop, former First Deputy
Commissioner Phillip Banks unexpectedly resigned, and about two months after the resignation ofFirst Deputy Police
Commissioner Rafael Pineiro, the highest-ranking Hispanic in the NYPD
Police sources said the rank-and-file
are not happy with the appointment of

Tucker as he lacks the experience of ever

being a borough commander and has
jumped through the ranks without too
much on the beat experience.
This could not be verified as both the
police and mayors press office refused
to send the release on the appointment or
biography of Tucker at press time to Our
Time Press, the African-American weekly of record covering Central Brooklyn.
However, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries released a statement also questioning Tuckers qualifications.
The departure of Chief Banks,
which seems to have been unnecessarily
provoked, left a gaping hole that the police department will struggle to fill. Ben
Tucker has an interesting background,
but there is no recent evidence of any
meaningful community-based experience. Lets hope he will be successful,

imple. We keep at it. (Not that you

needed me to tell you that.) And it
would have been true no matter how
last night turned out.
In my lifetime, no President in his seventh and eighth years has enjoyed control of
either house of Congress. Not Eisenhower,
not Reagan, not Clinton and -- now -- not
Obama. But that was no reason not to try.
It was a horrible night, but nothing has
changed:
The Earth, I believe, is still more than
9,000 years old; climate change is still a tremendous problem; our infrastructure is still
crumbling -- even as there are still un- and
under-employed Americans eager for work
revitalizing it.
Most Americans still favor the American
Jobs Act that would put those un- and under-employed Americans back to work (but
that the Republicans block) . . . still favor
the comprehensive immigration reform that
economists say would boost our economy
(but that the Republicans block) . . . still favor
the $10.10 minimum wage and "universal

background checks" and the Employment

Nondiscrimination Act that the Republicans
block . . . still favor the Medicare expansion
funds the Republicans reject . . . still favor the
benefits of the Affordable Care Act that the
Republicans tried so hard to block, voted 52
times to repeal, and then spent $418 million
in negative TV spots to mischaracterize . . .
still favor refinancing federal student loan at
today's low rates . . . and the rights of women
to make difficult choices in consultation with
their doctors without government-mandated
vaginal probes.
And yet we failed to make the case.
(The predominant focus these last few
weeks was instead on the Ebola pandemic,
the American death toll from which has now
soared, I am compelled to report, to . . . still
zero.)
Sure we got unemployment down in two
years to where Mitt Romney promised to get
it after four -- and all the rest: an averted depression, a record-high stock market, a rescued auto industry, a healthy housing market,
a strong dollar, a plummeting deficit, health
care security, two wars ended, BinLaden
dead, huge LGBT advancement.

Tanya Williams Young Offers

Advice to Women in Domestic
Violence Situations

his African-American woman is

sharp, articulate, outspoken, intelligent, polished, a graduate of the
Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New
York City and one of broadcast medias most
respected hosts/analysts/commentators/legal
analysts.
But Tanya Williams Youngs profile was
not so picture-perfect several years ago when

she lived with her then-spouse, high-profile

former NBA All-Star player Jayson Williams.
The former Basketball Wives co-star has
held roles of keynoter or spokesperson for various Domestic Violence Awareness organizations since she boldly shared her story on the
VH1 reality show.
In the wake of recent news stories about
abusive athletes, it appears Ms. Young cannot
tell her story enough. In a recent interview
with Ms. Young conducted by Howard Breuer
for Lifescript, it was revealed that one in every four women will be a victim of domestic
violence in her lifetime.
Ms. Young, a Huffington Post contributor, revealed her thoughts to Mr. Breuer
on how to spot warning signs. She admitted that early on in her marriage she had a
hunch that the relationship would end in a
life-or-death struggle.
What started as what she calls a fairy
tale union, wrote Mr. Breuer, took a
turn for the worse after Jayson suffered a
career-ending injury in 1999 at age 32. He
later faced legal problems due to substance
abuse, and served prison time after fatally
shooting a limo driver in his New Jersey
home in 2002.
Ms. Young shares that she slept with a
knife under my pillow because I didnt know
which Jayson was coming in the house fun,
gregarious, giving, a person everyone loves,
or drunk, high (who would have) violent outbursts.

VOL. 19 NO. 44

She was like many abused spouses who

are too scared or ashamed to go public, according to the article. She didnt take action
until it was too late.
Death threats, shattered car windows, physical abuse became her
norm until she finally filed for divorce
in 2009. The divorce is still pending.
As a spokesperson for the National Domestic
Violence Hotline, Young offers abuse counseling for millions.
Young told Lifescript that domestic violence is a more important subject than ever.
The health care toll from domestic violence,
according to the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, exceeds $4 billion annually.
Also, CDC studies have found, In addition to emotional and immediate physical injuries, victims are prone to a host of chronic
health issues that can persist up to 15 years
after the abuse ends. In the Lifescript article, Ms. Young offered the following advice to
women in abusive relationships.
Recognizing the Signs
Domestic [abuse] is when someone
[tries] to control you repeatedly: what you
do, where you go, your thoughts. Physically.
Emotionally. Psychologically. Financially.
If its a pattern of a man verbally abusing you
and beating you down physically and emotionally you need to get help.
On Leaving
Leaving an abusive relationship is tricky
because the abuser can often persuade his partner that hell change, or that he has changed.
For many women, abuse has become such a
part of everyday life they feel like theyre the
problem, Young explains. What did I do to
upset him? they ask.
Lack of support also prevents women from
speaking out. If your partner is a high-profile

person, no one may believe your story, Young

explains.
And many women fear for their lives.
Young says she didnt make the call to
police or the NBA because she feared for
the safety of her two daughters.
But dont do what I did, she warns.
The violence may escalate, and you
cant stop a gun.
In fact, more than three times as many
women are murdered by guns used by their
husbands or other intimate acquaintances than
are killed by strangers weapons, according to
Futures Without Violence, an abuse prevention advocacy group.
Dont Be a Victim
To avoid or minimize harm to yourself and
your children, Young urges anyone experiencing
abuse to seek counseling and get out of the relationship as soon as possible.
If you dont love yourself enough to leave,
love your children, she says. Let them be the
reason you decide to be safe and healthy.
For women trapped in an abusive
relationship, Young suggests preparing an emergency bag for a quick
escape, and hiding it somewhere
at home, at work or with a trusted
neighbor, friend or relative. What she
calls the UROK (You Are Okay) Survival Kit contains, change of clothes
for yourself and your children, copies of birth certificates, extra checks,
and recent picture of yourself, your
children and the abuser, among other
necessaries.
If you or your children are in immediate
danger, dont wait, she insists, Get out of
harms way and call 911, she says. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is: (800)
799-7233.

faces up to 50 years to life in prison

if convicted.
Questions surround what signs the
Torres/Smith family exhibited that would
raise suspicions of child abuse. The family is a married couple. Husband Smith
took on the responsibility of Torres two
previous children when he married her.
Normal intact families share child care
duties as had happened that day when
Smith watched the children while Torres
was at work. Are married step-fathers now
automatically suspected of child abuse?
Is a wife/mother who leaves her children
with her husband while she goes to work
automatically suspected of child neglect?
Less than a week after Jeidas death,
4-year-old Linayjah Meraldo was beaten
to death by her mother Latoya Curry in
the Briarwood Family Residence, a Salvation Army shelter in Queens. Curry was
held without bail after being charged with
murder, assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
Anyone that deals with the welfare of
children or families has a moral and societal obligation to report harm or potential
danger, and this legislation will ensure
that everyone contracted in New York
State for this responsibility will fulfill that

duty, said Adams. In the wake of recent

tragedies that have befallen our communities, there is an added sense of urgency
to assure New Yorkers that government is
fulfilling its primary mission of protecting
the people.
You assume that everybody that
comes in contact with children in this context would have that mandate, but they obviously didnt, said Parker. And so, we
really need to close that loophole.
When asked about the expansion of
mandated reporting that would entrench the
power dynamic between shelter workers
and shelter residents that often leaves shelter residents at the mercy of sexual coercion
from some shelter workers, Adams said he
would be interested in having focus groups
with single women and single female-headed families in order to gather information
about that power dynamic and how it impacts women shelter residents.
Adams added, Mandatory reporting
does not mean mandatory conviction.
A preliminary case is opened. An ACS
worker will do a physical examination
of the child and make a determination.
Your child is not removed from your
home merely because someone makes an
allegation.

Adams, Parker call for

expanded mandatory
reporting of child abuse
Questions Arise as Child was Beaten to Death in NYC Shelter

By Mary Alice Miller

orough President Eric Adams

and State Senator Kevin Parker
announced a legislative effort
that would expand mandatory reporting
requirements of suspected child abuse
cases. This announcement came one
week after the tragic death of threeyear-old Jeida Torres, who was beaten
by her stepfather, and the assault on her
5-year-old brother Andrew, in her residence at a New York City Department
of Homeless Services family shelter located at 38 Cooper Street in Bushwick.
Parker is sponsoring the bill at Adams
request.
The bill would expand the persons responsible for reporting cases of suspected
child abuse to include employees, volunteers or agents of any corporate entity
having an agreement with a municipality
as a homeless shelter provider and would
set up protocols to train covered persons
to identify and report suspected or actual
child abuse.
Adams explained his reasoning for
expanding covered mandated reporters: We are expanding the areas where
homeless shelters are going to be located using a lot of outside vendors and
private contractors to be shelter locations to give families wraparound services. If we are going to expand those
services, then we need to expand who
has mandatory reporting requirements,

said Adams. Those private entities that

now have housing facilities with families and children, they should now be required like police, teachers and doctors
are required [to report suspected child
abuse]. If they see someone committing
child abuse or they suspect child abuse,
they should be mandated to report it.
Around 4pm on Saturday, October
18, bloodcurdling screams were heard
coming from a city-owned shelter apartment at 38 Cooper Street. Kimberly
Torres, mother of 3-year-old Jeida and
5-year-old Andrew, was at work at a retail store while her 20-year-old husband
Kelsey Smith babysat the children. The
childrens screams were so relentless
that a neighbor called 911. When police
arrived at the scene, they found both
children beaten black and blue. Jeida
was taken to Wyckoff Hospital where
she died from choking and repeated
punches. Smith had fled the scene and
days later was arrested at his aunts
home. Smith, who had 14 prior arrests
dating back to 2008, apparently beat
Jeida because she went to the bathroom
in her pants.
Brooklyn District Attorney Ken
Thompson charged Jeidas killer with
second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, assault and endangering the
welfare of a child. We intend to seek justice on behalf of these two beautiful, innocent children, said DA Thompson.
Smith was held without bail and

Project Re-Education

Purchase of Manhattan Opera

Exposes Long-Held Myth
Introduction to Three-Part Series

urchase of Manhattan, a
groundbreaking Opera about
the biggest real estate non-deal
in the history of the United States will be sungto-life, Thursday, Nov. 20, 7:00pm at the Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan.
The Opera is scored for three solo voices,
a chorus, American Indian singers, orchestra and Native American flute by preeminent
Mohican composer, Brent Michael Davids in
collaboration with celebrated Abenaki author,
Joseph Bruchac, for the libretto.
Real estate in Manhattan is valued at upwards of eight trillion dollars, today, a very far
cry from the legendary price $24. Given by the
arriving Dutch to the Lenape Indians they met.
At the time, the selling of land was not a
concept understood or even believed in by the
Lenape (Native Americans who trace their
history on the island, more than 10,000 years).
So according to the clergy and parish of the
Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan (a
faith institution that is publicly acknowledging perhaps the first true real estate hoax in
the history of America) and the designers and
organizers of the planned Lenape Centerfor
Manhattan, the sale never took place.
Of note, Davids designed the invitation
by superimposing his own photograph of the
modern-day Manhattan Bridge and a street
light over vintage paintings of the supposed
sale of Manhattan (Turtle Island) or Manhattan by the Lenape toDutch Settlers.
Indeed, the Purchase of Manhattan opera bridges the vast gap between reality and

lie, fact and fiction, andin the processesexposes New Yorks first real gentrification story.
Perhaps the frontrunners of Common
Core dogma can get on track with truth by
raising the standards of its own proposedelementary school curriculum with the re-telling of this one chapter in New York City
history. Of course that would lead to a huge
review of the first municipal workers -- enslaved Africans -- who are buried on and
near the grounds of City Hall. We urge you
to fill the gaps in your childs knowledge of
New York City history with the experience
of being present duringthis Nov. 20 event.
Davids music interlaces American Indian
and Western European styles in a hybrid mix that
is exuberant and dazzling, and, too, educational.
Our Time Press exclusive Interviews with
Mr. Davids, Rev. Robert Chase, founding director of Intercessions, a justice-based global initiative of the Collegiate Church of New York, and
Joe Baker, co-founder and executive director of
The Lenape Center, will be presented in Part One
of a three-part series to start next week, November 13th in celebration of the November 20th
opera presentation and support of The Lenape

All Elections are Local: 2014

General Election Results

Brook
Is In The House

By Eddie Castro

n Monday night, I had the pleasure of attending my third consecutive home opener for the Brooklyn
Nets. Two chili dogs, a red velvet cake and a soft
drink had me at ease as I sat back and watched
the Nets play their first game this year at the Barclays Center. Opening night has always been a
fun experience. Grammy-winning recording
artist Ashanti sang the most amazing rendition
of the Star-Spangled Banner Ive ever heard and
Brooklyns own recording artist Fabolous (sic)
introduced the starting lineup. Although the opposing team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, did
not have their two star players in Kevin Durant
(foot) and Russell Westbrook (hand), the Nets
took care of business in what was a 116-85 victory.
Now its only been just three games in, but
new head coach Lionel Hollins has to like what
he is seeing for the team as far as their chemistry goes. Six players were in double figures last
night, including an astounding 50 points coming off the bench from players like Alan Anderson and Mason Plumlee. Veterans like Deron
Williams and Joe Johnson stepped up as well.
D-Will scored 17 points and dished out nine assists, coming just one assist shy of his first double-double of the year. Not to steal a phrase from
one of boxings greats, but Joe Johnson has been
smokin so far this season shooting the ball
with confidence. Johnson poured in 13 points
with 6 rebounds and 6 assists Monday night.
The big story had to be the Nets big man,
Brook Lopez. Lopez made his season debut
Monday night, and after a quiet first half, he
began the second half with a thunderous dunk.
Lopez contributed very much in the win with 18
points, his first game back since December 22
of last year due to a broken foot. Coach Hollins
knows that Lopez is and will be a gigantic factor in what the Nets will be able to do as far as
the team getting into the playoffs. The Eastern
Conference is pretty much balanced and wide
open, not counting the Bulls and the Cavaliers.
The question is, can that foot of Brooks hold up
for an entire NBA season? If Lopez is able to
overcome the foot problems, along with youngsters like Corey Jefferson and Markel Brown
expected back from injury to go along with the
other vets, Brooklyn can very well be this years
sleeper team in the East.
Sports Notes: (Football) After another embarrassing loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Jets
are now a horrendous 1-8. Things do not appear
to get any better as Ben Roethlisberger and the
Steelers come to town. Big Ben has thrown
12 touchdown passes in the last 2 games.
The Giants will head to Seattle to face the
defending champion Seahawks. (Basketball)
The Knicks and Nets rekindle their rivalry as
the two teams meet in the Barclays Center on
Friday for the first of four meetings this year.
(New York City Marathon) It was yet again
an all-Kenya affair. Kipsang won this years
marathon finishing at a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes and 59 seconds. He also won the 2013 Berlin Marathon and the 2014 London Marathon.
For the women, Mary Keitany won finishing
at 2 hours, 25 minutes and 7 seconds. A twotime winner of the London Marathon, Keitany
is also the winner of the 2013 and 2014 Boston
and Chicago Marathons.

Its official. Jesse Hamilton is the new

state Senator for the 19thSenatorial District
covering large swaths of central Brooklyn.
Latrice Walker is the Assembly representative for Brownsvilles 55thDistrict. Charles
Barron was elected to the 60thAssembly
District covering East New York. RodneyseBichotte is the first woman of Haitian
descent elected to the42nd stateAssembly
District representing Flatbush. All other central Brooklyn representatives were reelected,
including state legislators and congressional
members Yvette Clarke and Hakeem Jeffries.
New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo has won his second term with 54% of the
vote, less than he got 4 years ago when he ran
against Carl Paladino. No surprise, but the
way he won re-election has left a bad taste
in some peoples mouth. First, he refused to
debate Zephyr Teachout during the primary.
Then, in order to get the Working Families
Party endorsement Cuomo promised to support increased minimum wage and support
for a Democratic Majority State Senate.
In response, Cuomo formed the Womens
Equality Party in order to support his 2013
State of the State Address 10-point Womens
Equality Agenda.

Green Party which fields its own candidates in a limited number of district races
got more votes (165,000) than the Working Families Party (115,000), which cross
endorses candidates. The Womens Equality
Party did not meet the 50,000 gubernatorial
vote threshold to establish itself as a state political party.
After surviving the risk of losing its ballot
status to Cuomos Womens Equality Party,
WFP director Bill Lipton derided Cuomo for
spending time and money creating a fake
Womens Equality Party. In addition, Cantor criticized Cuomo for leaving campaign
housekeeping funds unspent which could
have been used to support Democratic candidates for the state Senate. As a result, Republicans solidified their control of the state
Senate with 32 seats out of 63.
New York voters affirmed all three ballot
propositions: changing the NYS constitution
to create a new redistricting commission,
electronic distribution of bills to legislators
3 days before a vote, and a $2 billion bond
act to fund broadband or wireless Internet
in schools, construction of new pre-K classroom space, and school security technology.
Only 30% of New York State registered
voters bothered to show up at the polls at all.
Nationally, new voting restrictions (par-

ticularly in the South) and the Democratic

coalition habit of not showing up for midterm
elections led to the Republicans getting more
than enough U.S. Senate seats to take the majority. Coupled with a GOP majority in the
House, President Obama faces two choices
during the final two years of his presidency:
ruthlessly wield his veto pen or acquiesce to
GOP demands to abolish the Affordable Care
Act, restrict birth control and abortion care,
cut food stamps and housing subsidies, abolish minimum wage outright, restrict environmental regulations, and give more tax breaks
to the wealthy 1%.
The new U.S. Senate GOP majority will
have an immediate consequential impact on
Obamas presidency. All taxing and spending originates in the House, but only the
Senate confirms presidential nominations.
The announcement of U.S. Attorney General
Eric Holders resignation, the risk of a U.S.
Supreme Court Justice dying or becoming
otherwise incapacitated, and numerous open
federal judge seats point to the power of the
Senate to confirm nominees or interfere with
the ability of President Obamas administration to function. Even Obamas nominee for
Surgeon General has been held up for a year;
the open Surgeon General seat became starkly critical during the recent arrival of Ebola in
the United States.
Democratic coalitions who vote during
presidential elections but stay home during
midterms will hopefully learn that all elections matter and vote accordingly or continue to blame the presidency.

Cheryls Stars

Since its inception in 2010, The Stars of New York Dance has provided 36 children with free and subsidized dance education and
training with the local, community-based dance organizations.

heryl Todmann, the founder and

executive producer of the Stars of
New York Dance, now celebrating its fifth year, gives credit to the success
of her much-heralded gala fundraiser and
dance competition to hundreds.
Although this fifth year event is a milestone for me, personally, says the community leader, herself a professional dancer
and choreographer, I must share any accolades with everyone who ever dreamed
of dancing or encouraged a child to dance;
to the audiences whose ticket purchases
contribute every year to scholarships for
young dancers and career aspirants; to the
many people on stage working and behind
the scenes working; to the recurring event
sponsors; to the scholarship recipients and
candidates; the choreographers; the instructors; to the dancers professional, amateur,
two-left footed or otherwise; to the mothers,
the fathers, the grandparents, the caregivers; the make-up artists, the costumers, to
just about everyone who has supported this
effort, even if its just with a smile.
Creating art, building community and
changing the lives of children, she says, is
what this is all about, and thats why, at the
end of the evening, everyone is a star, everyone, a winner.

Burkina Faso crisis:

Shots fired at state TV

There are claims of violence against civilians

By Laeila Adjovi in Ouagadougou

nrest in Burkina Faso has led

to state-run TV going off air for
several hours after soldiers fired
gunshots at its offices to force protesters and
journalists to disperse.
Elsewhere, soldiers cleared thousands of
demonstrators from a square in the capital
and barricaded the area.
The army seized power on Friday after
long-time leader Blaise Compaore quit following days of protests. The UN has condemned the military takeover and threatened sanctions.
West Africa envoy Mohamed Ibn Chambas said the military must allow a civilian

transfer of power. The army named Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida as the leader of a
transitional government on Saturday.
On Sunday evening, Lt Col Zida met
opposition leaders for talks. Following
the meeting, a military spokesman said the
army would put in place a transition body...
with all the components to be adopted by a
broad consensus.
Thousands of protesters gathered on
Sunday at various places around Ouagadougou, the Burkinabe capital, to demonstrate
against the army.
There were chaotic scenes as both opposition leader Saran Sereme and former Defence
Minister Kwame Lougue turned up at the state
TV headquarters. The crowds believed Ms

Sereme was about to announce that she was

willing to lead the transition, the BBCs Laeila
Adjovi in Ouagadougou reports.
Reports suggest retired General Lougue
also intended to announce that he could lead
the country.
However, shortly after they arrived, gunfire broke out and staff and protesters fled.
On Sunday evening, key opposition figures met Col Zida for talks. Those present
included party leader Zephirin Diabre, former Foreign Minister Ablasse Ouedraogo,
ex-Prime Minister Roch Marc Christian
Kabore and party leader Benewende Sankara. However, Ms Sereme reportedly left
before the talks began and there were no
details on what was discussed.
Mass protests first erupted last week
when long-time leader Mr Compaore attempted to extend his 27-year rule. Parts of
the parliament building were set on fire, and
the president fled to Ivory Coast. The army
quickly stepped in to fill the power vacuum,
declaring that Lt Col Isaac Zida would be
the countrys transitional leader.

He was second-in-command of the presidential guard, and his selection apparently

came after a power struggle with the overall
army chief, Gen Honore Traore.
Many protesters had called for Gen Lougue to lead a transitional government instead.
However, in an interview with BBC Afrique
(in French), the retired general said he had
been marginalised by his military colleagues.
He was forced to leave military negotiations after the atmosphere became tense and
he began to fear for his life, he said. Dozens fled, some later complaining that soldiers had beaten them.
Under Burkina Fasos constitution, the
president of the Senate should take over
after the national president resigns and an
election should take place between 60 and
90 days afterwards.
The African Union, the US and regional
economic bloc Ecowas have all condemned
the military takeover.
While Mr Compaores attempt to extend
his time in office was the immediate trigger
for the protests, analysts say high prices,
low wages and persistent poverty have also
fuelled discontent.

Many New Yorkers know Byrd
as a New York radio legend, who
has been on the airwaves since the
1960s. His years as a DJ on WWRL
with the infotainment GBE and
since 1980s as a talk show host on
WLIB, WBLS and WBAI. However, theres his parallel career as a
poet, performer, rapper and lyricist.
And, Wonder is a wonderful part of
it.
Byrd and Wonder first met
in Buffalo in 1960s. Byrd was a
self-described Motown fanatic
teenage radio disc jockey and Wonder was a teen music sensation touring with the Motown Revue. I was
a teenage DJ and he was a teenage
recording artist, Byrd recalled. It
was a nice connection because the
people around us were older.
A few years later, Byrd was
working overnight at WWRL when
Wonder called and asked him to
write the lyrics to three songs.
Tragically, both Wonder and Byrd
lost the tapes. It was a deep experience for me, said Byrd. The realization for me was that by losing
the songs, I had lost the opportunity
by not believing in myself.
By 1975, when Wonder called
about input into Songs in the Key
of Life, Byrd was ready. Now,
Im excited because Im getting
that second chance, said Byrd. He
worked diligently for months with
the classical soundtrack and title
that Wonder supplied for Village
Ghetto Land and researched Black
history for the lyrics to Black History. Byrd even recorded the Al
Fann youth ensemble for the kids
segment in Black Man. I wanted to make the dynamics of what
we were saying in context with the
Bi-Centennial and to have that historical ring it needed.
I think that Stevie was able to
create a musical masterpiece on a
canvas of music with Songs in the
Key of Life, explained Byrd. It
shows an artist created landscape
which hasnt really be duplicated
by many artist since that time. Its a
two record set, a musical songbook
and it still stands the test of time
across generations. The music and
the melodies are brilliant. His vocal
performance is brilliant. The stories
are inspiring, they cover a wide
range of topics. Essentially, it is a
timeless, classic. Stevie broke the
mold. Its a musical monument.
Over the years, Byrd has written lyrics for Millie Jacksons I
Cry, Jimmy Castor Bunchs Soul
Traveling and Stevie Wonders

Dark and Lovely are just a few

of his songs. Byrd wrote and performed Every Brother Aint a

wrote Mind Power dedicated to
Byrd. His work has been even sampled by Nas and 50 Cent.
In the 1980s, Byrd became a
Motown artist. His rap song The

Their special friendship still endures.

the human spirit, which we both
share.

The Hon. Franklin Morton, One of

Brooklyns First Black Judges, Passes at 94

etired New York State Supreme Court Justice Franklin

Morton, one of the first African Americans to serve as an assistant district attorney and as a judge in
Brooklyn, died last week in Florida at
age 94.
The Morton family is one of the
great families in Brooklyn history,
commented Brooklyn College journalism professor and local historian Ron
Howell, a family friend. Judge Mortons grandmother, Dr. Verina Morton,
was one of the first black women physicians in the United States and, from
her home in Downtown Brooklyn in the
early 1900s, she helped organize The
Lincoln Settlement which later evolved
into the Urban League.
Judge Morton served in the U.S.
Army during World War II and, despite
his patriotism, held lifelong resentments
about the segregation he faced during
his military service. He played basketball for Long Island University, Brooklyn and he also attended, for a time, Lincoln University, eventually graduating
from St. Johns Law School.

Judge Morton is survived by his beloved daughters Rebecca and Catherine,

and son, Franklin, Jr. Although Morton
lived his retirement years in Sarasota,
Fl., he retained a life membership in the
Brooklyn-based Comus Club.
Judge Mortons connections with
Brooklyn also dated from the early
1900s, when many of the boroughs politically active blacks were living in the
downtown area. His family (later in the
century) joined the eastward movement
of blacks into the section that became
known as Bedford-Stuyvesant.
During his time as a State Supreme
Court Justice, Morton and his late wife
Gwendolyn and their children moved
to Crown Heights, where they lived on
President Street.
Justice Morton, a member the United Action Democratic Club, served on
the Supreme Court from 1968 until his
retirement in 1988.
A memorial service for the judge is
being planned for December 13 at St.
Wilfreds Episcopal Church in Sarasota, Fla. (Submitted by friends of The
Morton Family)

rooklyn Queens Land Trust (BQLT)

will celebrate its first decade as a land
trust on November 12that a reception
hosted by the Skylight Gallery at Restoration
Plaza in Bedford Stuyvesant. This festive event
will bring together community leaders, elected
officials, gardeners, and special guests to reflect
on BQLTs history and raise funds to support
the organizations future growth.
BQLT currently owns 33 community gardens in 16 diverse neighborhoods of Brooklyn
and Queens, with the majority in central Brooklyn, and the organization is charged with preserving them in perpetuity. Most of these gardens were established by local residents in the
1970s and 80s, when city-owned lots were left
vacant after the buildings on them deteriorated,
burned down or were demolished. Community residents and activists were the leaders in
transforming these lots into vibrant community
gardens that served the surrounding neighborhoods.
In 1999, the city decided to put many of
these garden properties up for public auction.
Throughout NYC, community leaders and gardeners protested, organizedand, along with key
partner organizations and elected officials,stood
up for the gardens that they had invested so
much in cultivating. Some of the gardens were
sold as planned, but The Trust for Public Land
(TPL) saved 69 parcels and began the process
of transferring them to local ownership. This
involved setting up three land trusts to hold the
deeds: Manhattan, The Bronx, and a shared
land trust for Brooklyn and Queens.

From its inception in 2004, BQLT has embodied the model of a grassroots, bottom-up
governance structure. Its 15-member Board
of Directors is drawn largely from the garden
membership, and decisions are made by the
membership body in a one-garden, one-vote
democratic process. In this way, BQLT provides an opportunity for residents and garden
leaders to have a direct voice in decisions about
how their neighborhoods evolve.
BQLT spent seven years working with
TPL and the Land Trust Alliance (LTA) to
build capacity and learn how to operate as an
independent 501c3 non-profit organization.
During this period, board members and gardeners received training and support as BQLT
established itself, and on December 23, 2011,
TPL transferred 32 property deeds to BQLT.
Over the next two years, BQLT and Merrick
Marsden Neighbors Association worked together to bring a 33rd property under land trust
protection, and this deed was successfully
transferred to BQLT on December 23, 2013.
As BQLT celebrates its 10th Anniversary
this year, the organization is reflecting on the
major milestones achieved and on the many
individuals and groups who made this journey possible. At the November 12th reception, BQLT will recognize the contributions of
these special guests:
NYS Senator Velmanette Montgomery, 25th
SD(Brooklyn)andNYS Assembly Member Barbara M. Clark, 33rd AD (Queens), who have
each provided long-standing support of BQLT's
conservation mission and diverse community.
