he Herbert Von King Park Recreation Center has seen their longtime
after school program decertified,
sparking fears among parents and workers
alike that the self-empowerment center may
face layoffs or have services contracted out
to a non-profit organization with no ties to
the community.
The center houses one of the best infrastructures in the city for the performing arts
with a full indoor stage and outdoor amphitheater. Additionally local artisans and non-profit
organizations in such varied fields as ceramics
and the martial arts often engage the many local youth between the ages of 6-13 that have
been utilizing the space for generations as a
true community center.
They changed the scope of the program from a regular certified after school
program to what is a drop in program
where they are not allowed to assist kids
with home work anymore and can only do
one activity per day, said one irate parent
source.
The changes made quietly occurred in
August when the States Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) decertified Von Kings free School Aged Child
Care (SACC) Program. The program has
been in operation at the center since November 2006.
At the same time, the citys Parks Department, which manages the recreation
center cut the hours from 10 am to 8 pm
Monday through Saturday to 10 am to 6 pm
Tuesday through Saturday.

State sources noted the closing of this
program was not the result of an OCFS
enforcement action, and said the decision
came from the city.

city hall to protest the lack of meaningful diversity in the NYPDs upper ranks.
You can protect our community and respect our community.
Other Central Brooklyn elected at the
press conference included City Council
members Jumaane Williams and Robert
Cornegy, and Assembly member Walter
Mosley all of whom said they expect
the de Blasio Administration to make
good on his promise to improve relations between police and the communities they patrol.
The political leaders were also
joined by advocacy groups including
Charles Billups, President of the Grand
Council of Guardians; Anthony Miranda, President of the National Latino Officers Association who represent black and Hispanic officers in the
NYPD.
Billups said at the press conference
that Banks was a respected police officer with deep ties to the community, and
that whoever replaces him should have
the same type of fair but tough record.
Banks also had a good reputation
on the local level with individual police
community councils, according to James
Caldwell, a respected Crown Heights
Community activist and longtime president of the 77th Precinct Community
Council.
I was sad to hear about his resignation, said Caldwell. Im very fond of
him. Banks stood his ground but he liked
working with all the communities. The
fact he stood his ground is good and I
hope whoever comes in as his replacement has real power.
Caldwell also took Bratton to task
for not meeting with the local community councils. No one from the top brass
has met the little people yet. Thats not
good.
The controversy comes as the NYPD
remains working without a contact
and police sources say moral among
the rank-and-file police that patrol the
streets is very low.
You need someone who understands
the issues in the community, said the
police source. He (Bratton) is not looking for people that are qualified to be
promoted at the top level, hes looking
for someone he can control.

Project Re-Education
urchase of Manhattan, a
groundbreaking Opera about
the biggest real estate non-deal
in the history of the United States will be sungto-life, Thursday, Nov. 20, 7:00pm at the Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan.
The Opera is scored for three solo voices,
a chorus, American Indian singers, orchestra and Native American flute by preeminent
Mohican composer, Brent Michael Davids in
collaboration with celebrated Abenaki author,
Joseph Bruchac, for the libretto.
Real estate in Manhattan is valued at upwards of eight trillion dollars, today, a very far
cry from the legendary price $24. Given by the
arriving Dutch to the Lenape Indians they met.
At the time, the selling of land was not a
concept understood or even believed in by the
Lenape (Native Americans who trace their
history on the island, more than 10,000 years).
So according to the clergy and parish of the
Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan (a
faith institution that is publicly acknowledging perhaps the first true real estate hoax in
the history of America) and the designers and
organizers of the planned Lenape Centerfor
Manhattan, the sale never took place.
Of note, Davids designed the invitation
by superimposing his own photograph of the
modern-day Manhattan Bridge and a street
light over vintage paintings of the supposed
sale of Manhattan (Turtle Island) or Manhattan by the Lenape toDutch Settlers.
Indeed, the Purchase of Manhattan opera bridges the vast gap between reality and
lie, fact and fiction, andin the processesexposes New Yorks first real gentrification story.
Perhaps the frontrunners of Common
Core dogma can get on track with truth by
raising the standards of its own proposedelementary school curriculum with the re-telling of this one chapter in New York City
history. Of course that would lead to a huge
review of the first municipal workers -- enslaved Africans -- who are buried on and
near the grounds of City Hall. We urge you
to fill the gaps in your childs knowledge of
New York City history with the experience
of being present duringthis Nov. 20 event.
Davids music interlaces American Indian
and Western European styles in a hybrid mix that
is exuberant and dazzling, and, too, educational.
Our Time Press exclusive Interviews with
Mr. Davids, Rev. Robert Chase, founding director of Intercessions, a justice-based global initiative of the Collegiate Church of New York, and
Joe Baker, co-founder and executive director of
The Lenape Center, will be presented in Part One
of a three-part series to start next week, November 13th in celebration of the November 20th
opera presentation and support of The Lenape
Center. The series runs through the November
27th Thanksgiving Day issue.
Event tickets are $24 with proceeds to
go to the construction of a physical Lenape
Center in Manhattan. For more information

Press urges Educators, Parents, Students to

Brook
Is In The House
By Eddie Castro
n Monday night, I had the pleasure of attending my third consecutive home opener for the Brooklyn
Nets. Two chili dogs, a red velvet cake and a soft
drink had me at ease as I sat back and watched
the Nets play their first game this year at the Barclays Center. Opening night has always been a
fun experience. Grammy-winning recording
artist Ashanti sang the most amazing rendition
of the Star-Spangled Banner Ive ever heard and
Brooklyns own recording artist Fabolous (sic)
introduced the starting lineup. Although the opposing team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, did
not have their two star players in Kevin Durant
(foot) and Russell Westbrook (hand), the Nets
took care of business in what was a 116-85 victory.
Now its only been just three games in, but
new head coach Lionel Hollins has to like what
he is seeing for the team as far as their chemistry goes. Six players were in double figures last
night, including an astounding 50 points coming off the bench from players like Alan Anderson and Mason Plumlee. Veterans like Deron
Williams and Joe Johnson stepped up as well.
D-Will scored 17 points and dished out nine assists, coming just one assist shy of his first double-double of the year. Not to steal a phrase from
one of boxings greats, but Joe Johnson has been
smokin so far this season shooting the ball
with confidence. Johnson poured in 13 points
with 6 rebounds and 6 assists Monday night.
The big story had to be the Nets big man,
Brook Lopez. Lopez made his season debut
Monday night, and after a quiet first half, he
began the second half with a thunderous dunk.
Lopez contributed very much in the win with 18
points, his first game back since December 22
of last year due to a broken foot. Coach Hollins
knows that Lopez is and will be a gigantic factor in what the Nets will be able to do as far as
the team getting into the playoffs. The Eastern
Conference is pretty much balanced and wide
open, not counting the Bulls and the Cavaliers.
The question is, can that foot of Brooks hold up
for an entire NBA season? If Lopez is able to
overcome the foot problems, along with youngsters like Corey Jefferson and Markel Brown
expected back from injury to go along with the
other vets, Brooklyn can very well be this years
sleeper team in the East.
Sports Notes: (Football) After another embarrassing loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Jets
are now a horrendous 1-8. Things do not appear
to get any better as Ben Roethlisberger and the
Steelers come to town. Big Ben has thrown
12 touchdown passes in the last 2 games.
The Giants will head to Seattle to face the
defending champion Seahawks. (Basketball)
The Knicks and Nets rekindle their rivalry as
the two teams meet in the Barclays Center on
Friday for the first of four meetings this year.
(New York City Marathon) It was yet again
an all-Kenya affair. Kipsang won this years
marathon finishing at a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes and 59 seconds. He also won the 2013 Berlin Marathon and the 2014 London Marathon.
For the women, Mary Keitany won finishing
at 2 hours, 25 minutes and 7 seconds. A twotime winner of the London Marathon, Keitany
is also the winner of the 2013 and 2014 Boston
and Chicago Marathons.
Green Party which fields its own candidates in a limited number of district races
got more votes (165,000) than the Working Families Party (115,000), which cross
endorses candidates. The Womens Equality
Party did not meet the 50,000 gubernatorial
vote threshold to establish itself as a state political party.
After surviving the risk of losing its ballot
status to Cuomos Womens Equality Party,
WFP director Bill Lipton derided Cuomo for
spending time and money creating a fake
Womens Equality Party. In addition, Cantor criticized Cuomo for leaving campaign
housekeeping funds unspent which could
have been used to support Democratic candidates for the state Senate. As a result, Republicans solidified their control of the state
Senate with 32 seats out of 63.
New York voters affirmed all three ballot
propositions: changing the NYS constitution
to create a new redistricting commission,
electronic distribution of bills to legislators
3 days before a vote, and a $2 billion bond
act to fund broadband or wireless Internet
in schools, construction of new pre-K classroom space, and school security technology.
Only 30% of New York State registered
voters bothered to show up at the polls at all.
Nationally, new voting restrictions (par-

From its inception in 2004, BQLT has embodied the model of a grassroots, bottom-up
governance structure. Its 15-member Board
of Directors is drawn largely from the garden
membership, and decisions are made by the
membership body in a one-garden, one-vote
democratic process. In this way, BQLT provides an opportunity for residents and garden
leaders to have a direct voice in decisions about
how their neighborhoods evolve.
BQLT spent seven years working with
TPL and the Land Trust Alliance (LTA) to
build capacity and learn how to operate as an
independent 501c3 non-profit organization.
During this period, board members and gardeners received training and support as BQLT
established itself, and on December 23, 2011,
TPL transferred 32 property deeds to BQLT.
Over the next two years, BQLT and Merrick
Marsden Neighbors Association worked together to bring a 33rd property under land trust
protection, and this deed was successfully
transferred to BQLT on December 23, 2013.
As BQLT celebrates its 10th Anniversary
this year, the organization is reflecting on the
major milestones achieved and on the many
individuals and groups who made this journey possible. At the November 12th reception, BQLT will recognize the contributions of
these special guests:
NYS Senator Velmanette Montgomery, 25th
SD(Brooklyn)andNYS Assembly Member Barbara M. Clark, 33rd AD (Queens), who have
each provided long-standing support of BQLT's
conservation mission and diverse community.
