Foreign Affairs
International relations and affairs have played a questionable role in the United States
since it was established nearly 200 to 300 years ago. The extreme budget that goes into
international defense and aid, many believe could be used to better the country at home rather
than abroad. The involvement in international affairs is and has been causing dispute in congress
along with the citizens of the United States. A resolution could be to essentially pull troops out of
foreign countries and back into the United States. Legislation and doctrines that were put in
place to allow the National Government to involve the country can be amended to help assist in
bringing the money and influences back into the United States, bettering the country
economically and politically.
The budget that is spent by sending troops and supplies into foreign countries is a large
part of the current debt. In an article on the United States national debt stated, The United
States' national debt is currently $17 trillion and increasing every day( Carpenter). This quote
expresses the extreme debt that the United States has and still is accumulating in deficit
spending, that a majority of this debt is from international expenses. This enormous and ever
growing debt that the country is putting itself into is often bought out by China, a large
economically dominant country that essentially owns the United States and its debt. Back in the
early 1800s, the United States went into the horrible habit of deficit spending that, in laymen
terms, means spending more money or giving out more money than the country can make in
revenues. This habit was used to bring the United States through wars, bonds, and to pay for

supplies and sustain a national defense. The large expense that goes into the United States
expenses is enormous and ever growing. Congress and the Executive Branch (President) are
trying to come up with ways to cut spending to decrease the national debt. This is a good
ideology, but in reality, extreme measures must be taken to help eliminate this debt. An article
that explains a good outlook on the countries national debt is by a student that stated, Barry
reiterated the idea that the national debt is a problem that affects everyone in the U.S. This is
something that extends across all party lines, Barry said. It doesn't matter if you're a
Republican, Democrat, somewhere in between, this is going to affect everyone in the United
States, and it's something we need to actively take steps toward reducing. So we need to put
politics aside and think about future generations(Carpenter). This excerpt/quote explains
exceptionally well how this issue needs to be looked upon by the United States Government.
National defense takes up nearly 2/3 of the countries expenses, most of which is deployed to
foreign countries to lend support in Iraq and Crimea, assisting in the fight for those under siege.
During the last couple years, the President had announced that he would start pulling
troops out of Iraq and other countries. In a debate between two Senators in the House said, In
their sharpest policy clash, Hana busa challenged Schatz on why he supports President Barack
Obama's decision to send 1,000 United States military troops, Apache helicopters and drones to
Iraq to calm sectarian violence.Schatz said that he, like Hana Busa, opposes a U.S. military
escalation in Iraq, but defended the troop deployment to protect the U.S. Embassy( DePledge).
This quote from an article displays perfectly how the United States sends troops and supplies
(money and weapons) to assist in international conflicts. The United States involved itself in
Iraqs civil conflicts for the past couple years, adding a now unnecessary expense, since the
conflict in this country does not directly affect the United States. In recent events, such as ISIL
and other tensions arising in the Middle East, the need and call for help has made Obama decide

to keep troops in these countries and even send more troops over. In the same debate which was
directly quoted by Schatz, a Senator, stated, that he[Schatz], like Hana busa, opposes a U.S.
military escalation in Iraq...( DePledge). This quote again expressed the Senators disapproval
for United States continuous intervention in international matters that does not directly affect the
country.
The United States has troops in Korea, Iraq, Crimea, Philippians, along with numerous
other countries that have past relations with the United States. A majority of the troops in these
countries are there assisting an already re-established government and economy. This persisting
presence is becoming evident that it is an unnecessary expense that the citizens of the United
States are paying for and also suffering from. The economy is still in a recession, being unstable
and not allowing people to flourish without economical difficulty due to the crash in 2006. Bring
troops who are in those countries that can hold their own and have a recovering government back
to the United States would cut down enormous budget deficits which could help contribute to a
recovering economy. This continuing dispute with unresolved arguments on whether to bring
troops home or keep them deployed is a debate in congress that is everlasting. This attention
could be directed towards other matters such as crime or assisting those on Welfare allowing
them to get back on their feet.
The United States government, ever since its declaration of independence from England,
has set up legislation and doctrines that determine how the country is to react to international
issues. When President Truman was elected and created the Truman Doctrine, the country was
dedicated into helping those counties that were under threat of their freedom and government.
This doctrine had a good intent but many people believe that the United States has taken
advantage of this doctrine and is stretching the limits of what they are permitted to do without
the peoples consent. In a analysis on the new debate between the House of Representatives and

Mock 4
the Senate discussed, The Republican and Democratic leaders of the Senate and House will also
receive a briefing from military commanders on whether there has been progress in the difficult
air campaign the United States and allies are waging against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq
(United States..). This quote explains how the National Government is attempting to adjust the
international policies. The two houses are trying to find a middle ground from which they can
help restrict the United States involvement militarily. Another quote about Obamas suggestion
to help internationally, states, Congress in coming weeks is expected to begin debating whether
to formally authorize military force against the Islamic State, but a vote might not come until
next year. Meanwhile, Congress is expected this year to debate Obama's plans for arming and
training Syrian rebels. A current authorization for these activities expires December 11(United
States..). This quote expressed how Obama wants to help in international affairs. President
Obama wants to involve the United States internationally by the deployment of troops and
supplies, which would help train Syria to fight the ISIL terrorist group. This is what the country
should be avoiding if the conflicts do not directly affect the United States and its citizens.
The United States was established with three branches of government and also two level
of government, the National and State. The founders did not want another ruling government
with sole power so they established the constitution, which defined each governments rights and
what they were able to do. This is where the issues arose and where the issue can be resolved. It
is true that amending the constitution is extremely hard, but if the United States and its citizens
elected non-corrupt and sincere officials, then change could come. This is a Utopian ideology,
but if the United States wants to recover and return to its ruling power status again, then change
is necessary and evident to the majority of the populous.
Foreign interference by the United States is a topic of dispute that many believe,
including professionals and elected officials, that the United States should change its approach to

Mock 5
handling foreign relations. The huge budget that goes into international defense and aid, many
believe could be used to better the country at home rather than abroad. The involvement in
international affairs continues to cause disputes in congress along with the citizens of the United
States, which could be solved by pulling troops out of foreign countries. Legislation and
doctrines that were put in place to allow the National Government to involve the country, can be
amended to help assist in bringing the money and influences back into the United States,
bettering the country economically and politically. With all said, the redistribution of budget,
legislation, and pulling troops and resources back into the United States are some of the ways
that professionals believe could help improve international relations and also the economy for
the citizenship at home.
