Humane Society of Eastern North Carolina

Shelter Efforts
The Humane Society of the United States estimates that 8-12 million animals
enter shelters each year.
Only 10 percent of the animals received by shelters have been spayed or neutered,
while 78 percent of pet dogs and 88 percent of pet cats are spayed or neutered,
according to the American Pet Products Association.
The cost of spaying or neutering a pet is less than the cost of raising puppies or
kittens for a year according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty
to Animals.
According the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
approximately 3 to 4 million of the companion animals enter animal shelters
nationwide every year are euthanized (60 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats).
More than 20 percent of people who leave dogs in shelters had adopted them from
a shelter according to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy.

Volunteers
About 200 volunteers work with the Humane Society of Eastern North Carolina
annually.
In 2012 volunteers donated over 12,000 hours of their time to HSEC.
Volunteers must attend the full length of HSECs new volunteer orientation.

Pet Ownership
About 62 percent of all households in the United States have a pet, according to
the American Pet Products Association.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says that the
majority of pets are obtained from acquaintances and family members.
Twenty-six percent of dogs are purchased from breeders, 20 to 30 percent of cats
and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues, and 2 to 10 percent are purchased
from pet stores.

Backgrounder:
About the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina
The Humane Society of Eastern Carolina is a non-profit no-kill organization that has
been around since the 1920s, and its mission is to serve as a safe home for abandoned
pets. Not only does it provide a temporary home for animals and provide surrender
services to those no longer able to care for a pet, it also facilitates pet adoptions and plans
social events. For more information visit http://www.hsecarolina.org/AboutUs.htm.

Though it only has a small hired staff, every year about 200 volunteers work with the
Humane Society, which is located in Greenville, NC. These volunteers donate much of
their time to help keep the HSEC clean, fundraise, socialize with the animals, and even
sometimes open their homes to foster a pet for a period of time. The organization aims to
inform the community about issues related to animals and would like to eventually
eliminate the over breeding of animals.

Historical Overview
Many animals every day end up unwanted, neglected, or lost, so the Humane Society of
Eastern Carolina was created to help these animals. It accepts them from within, as well
as outside of Pitt County, and gives them a chance to have a better home. It has worked
with countless other organizations to go above and beyond for the animals it has
received, like placing dogs with disabled people, the Pitt County Sheriffs Department,
sick cats with the Marley Fund, and holding off-site adoptions for cats at PetSmart.

Dana Hanson
The HSEC also donates supplies to the Friends of the Pitt County Animal Shelter and
Saving Grace for Felines, and makes appearances on WITN and WNCT to allow airtime
for animals to appear for adoption. Every first Saturday of the month a dog adoption
event is held at Lorettas Frozen Yogurt, and every third Saturday of the month the same
event is held at Sweet Pets. These events provide outside opportunities for those in the
local community to adopt or learn more about the HSEC without specifically visiting its
location.

Future Goals
The Humane Society of Eastern Carolina is working hard to inform and teach people
about the adoption, neglect, and abuse of animals and how anyone can help. Resources
and information are provided on its website on all these topics at
(http://www.hsecarolina.org/Cruelty.htm).
The HSEC also constantly needs volunteers and donations. With the amount of time and
money that goes into housing and taking care of so many animals, both are vital to its
success. Volunteers can partake in a variety of tasks, including greeting visitors, writing
for the HSEC Blog (http://humanesocietyofeasterncarolina.blogspot.com/), engaging with
the animals, foster an animal, aid with off-site adoption events, or help with a list of other
events.
These other events include but are not limited to, the Canine Crawl 5k, Paws to the
Pavement, Fluff and Puff Dog Washes, Bow Wow Bingo, Concession Stand at ECU
home football games, Howl-O-Ween Fall Festival, and Holiday Gift Wrapping. All the

Dana Hanson
events held by the HSEC aim to provide the local community with awareness and
interaction, hoping to market to potential pet adopters.

adoption with the hopes that one day the number of abandoned animals will drop.

What better way to add some love and life to your home than by saving a furry friend?
Adopting an animal actually saves two, the one that gets a new home, as well as the one
that gets to finally have shelter and care it desperately needed.

Copy: We have many pets that need loving homes! Typically there are 15 dogs and 18
cats available for adoption at our facility, as well as several who are staying with foster
families. Anyone is welcome to come spend time with an animal in our exercise area, and
if you are interested in adopting a pet you will be asked to fill out a questionnaire before
you can take the animal home. Every animal adopted will in turn save two- an animal that
is adopted provides an open home for a new animal!

you all were his home for so long. Mac is doing GREAT he has adjusted so well and has

take long at all to warm up to Matt and I. He has even become a little protective, which
we were hoping for. Thank you so much! - Katelyn Hollobaugh
