Note from the Teachers

The word is out! Students at the Southwest Utah
Youth
Center
are
officially
part
of
an
intra-facility competition league. Students will
have the opportunity to compete in a variety of
activities,
ranging
from
chess
to
ping-pong. The first
area of competition:
flag football. Under
the guidance of SWYC
staff, students have
already
begun
practicing
after
school.
We teachers
are doing our part to prepare the team through
additional fitness conditioning and practice time
in P.E.

What Were Learning!

Social Studies
In addition to regular coursework,
were reading the graphic novel
American
Born
Chinese by Gene
Luen Wang. The
novel ties into
the Utah Core
Curriculum for
each
students
Social Studies

Foothill
In
honor
of
Constitution
Day,
students
were pleased to
hear from a guest
speaker from the
Utah Bar Association. Mr. Timothy Daniels spoke on
legal issues on the municipal level
and separation of powers in the U.S.
government.

Math
Students are working on their own
individual coursework. The new Math
of Personal Finance books continue to
be a huge success.

Students are continuing to work on
their individual needed content area.
All are making good progress toward
completing
the
core
standard
requirements.

End of First Quarter

The first quarter of the 2014-15 school
year came to an end on Thursday,
September 25th. As of this newsletters
printing, students have earned a
combined total of 8.75 credits that
will
appear
on
first
quarter
transcripts.
We are very proud of the students who
worked hard this quarter. Working
hard in school not only gets students
closer to graduating, but contributes
to positive recommendations in parole
hearings.

English
We have started a new program
developed to improve each students
writing skills called, Reward Writing.
Also, we have begun to read the novel
The Pearl, by John Steinbeck. Both of
these additions should enhance the
vocabulary and writing skills of each
student.
