Newtons 1st Law of Motion

Inertia
Unit Physics part 2 Science 8th grade
By Zoe Jones

ENGAGE for NEWTONs FIRST LAW Of INERTIA

Marble in a Box (Inertia)
Teacher will give each table a marble and a small box. The box used
could be an empty box of matches or paperclips. Students will then
slide the box across a table to another student who will stop the box.
The box will not make a seamless trip across the table before coming
to a stop. The marble will continue to roll forward and push the box.
Students shall repeat this demonstration a few times. Ask the
students if they noticed anything strange about the boxs motion.
When they mention that the box jerked a bit at the end, ask them
why that might have happened. Relate this occurrence to Newtons
1st Law of Motion.
Crash Test Dummies
Teacher will show students a video of crash test dummies and use
that to open discussions of Newtons Laws of Motion. The videos
capture slow motion footage of a car crash and show the students
what happens when they do and do not use seatbelts. Introduce
Newtons 1st Law while also discussing car safety issues in the
classroom. Possible questions to ask: What happened to the crash
test dummies without seatbelts when the car crashed? What
happened to the crash test dummies with seatbelts when the car
crashed?

6. Reveal Characteristics Shared

Force is a push or a pull;
more mass more force of inertia.

Station 1: The snow man continued at

the same velocity after the car hit the
wall, because of the force of inertia.

Station 2: The penny did not move

when we flicked the note card.

Station 3: Video

Force of acceleration made the

snowman continue in the same
direction of the force. Think about
objects in a car or on the school bus,
even roller coasters keep moving
because of inertia.

Forces that are not moving will not start

to move unless there is a force strong
enough to make it unbalanced.

5. Observe Characteristics of New Concept

Inertia is a force and

depends on mass.
Objects in motion
continue to stay in
motion. Unless Acted on by an
unbalanced force.

Objects at rest(no motion) tend to

stay at rest (no motion). Unless
Acted on by an unbalanced force.

A rocket traveling in outer space will

continue to travel at a constant speed
because there are no outside forces.

7. Understanding of the New Concept: 8.6C

8.6(C) [R] - investigate and describe applications of Newton's law of inertia, law of force and acceleration, and law of action-reaction such as in
vehicle restraints, sports activities, amusement park rides, Earth's tectonic activities, and rocket launches.
