Stage 1 Identify Desired Results

Content Standards:
S4E1. Students will compare and contrast the physical attributes of stars, star patterns, and planets.
a. Recognize the physical attributes of stars in the night sky such as number, size, color and
patterns.
b. Compare the similarities and differences of planets to the stars in appearance, position, and
number in the night sky.
c. Explain why the pattern of stars in a constellation stays the same, but a planet can be seen in
different locations at different times.

Understandings
Students will understand:
1. That the sun is the central star in our solar system.
2. That the eight planets are in a particular sequence.
3. Why the patterns of stars in constellations stay the same, but a planet can be
seen in different locations at different times.

Related Misconceptions:
There are nine planets.

Essential Questions

Overarching Questions:
1. How has technology expanded
your knowledge of the solar
system?

Topical Questions:
1. What is Earths place in the Solar
System?
2. What are the physical attributes of
stars and star patterns?
3. What is the relationship between the
moons orbit around the Earth and its
appearance in the night sky?
4. What changes occur as the Earth
rotates on its axis and revolves
around the sun?

Stage 3-Learning Plan

Day 1: Using netbooks in the classroom, students will work in small groups
to research information about the solar system. The students will search
for information through My Big Campus and also from the resources that
are listed below:
http://www.kidzone.ws/planets/
http://www.kidsastronomy.com/solar_system.htm
https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/kids/

http://solarsystemfacts.net/
Day 2: Students will go to the media center to find more resources about
the solar system. Resources should include at least 2 grade level books
about the solar system. Students will create Glogster accounts. Students
will begin working on creating their Glogster about the solar system by
choosing which board they will use.
Day 3: At this point students should start putting information onto their
Glogster. This day will be specifically for getting their Glogster organized
with their information.
Day 4: Kahoot will be played as a review of what students have learned
about the solar system. Students should be putting the finishing touches
on their Glogsters.
Day 5: Students will present their Glogsters to the class, teacher and
media specialist.
Day 6: Think Gate assessment over the solar system will be given to all

students via the netbooks. Lan School will be used to send the assessment
to the netbooks.
Day 7: Students will participate in a Solar System Scavenger Hunt. This
will be the final assessment for the Solar System Unit.
