Resources for Childrens Literature
Websites:
Title: Lesson Plans for Children's Literature
URL: http://www.webenglishteacher.com/childlit.html
Entity responsible for site: Web English Teacher
This website would be a handy resource because it has basically every childrens literature
author you can think of and lesson plans to go with them. The lessons plans for the same book
range in the grade level that could be used for. There are options where children can listen to a
book and then complete an assignment or they can read the book and do an assignment. The
website also gives the option to break down the lesson plans based on topic of literature rather
than by author.

Title: Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children

URL: http://www.nea.org/grants/teachers-top-100-books-for-children.html
Entity responsible for site: National Education Association
This website was compiled in 2007 so I am sure there is a new list now, but this would still be
helpful. Teachers can use this website to find books that they should introduce in their
classrooms. The books range for different levels of reading.

Title: Random House Teachers & Librarians

URL: http://www.randomhouse.com/teachers/
Entity responsible for site: Bertelsmann
This website would be useful to teachers it has many resources. The resources vary from picture
books, educator guides, book talks, reading group guides, interactive lessons. I might use this
website to help me for my future career because I am most likely not going to be teaching in
Virginia. This website has a section on common core, which most states have adopted.

Title: Using Childrens Literature to Teach Social Skills

URL: http://www.ldonline.org/article/6194/
Entity responsible for site: WETA
This website would help special education teachers or even general education teachers. It
explains how childrens literature can be used to help teach children social skills. It goes the
importance of direct instruction, how to generalize from the childrens book to real life and the
evaluation process. This website focuses on books about making friends and gives a long list
of books that can be used.

Title: Childrens Literature Assembly

URL: http://www.childrensliteratureassembly.org/index.html
Entity responsible for site: Childrens Literature Assembly
This website is full of events and opportunities for teachers to learn how to incorporate
childrens literature in other subject areas. There is a section where teachers can learn to connect
science and math to childrens literature. Although most of the links on this website are for
events being held, they are an option to look and see if any are going on around you and has a list
of childrens books that teachers might want in their classrooms.

Non-websites:

Book
Title: Childrens Literature in the Reading Program
Author: Deborah A. Wooten, Bernice E. Cullinan
City of Publication: N/A
Publisher: International Reading Association, Inc.
Year of Publication: 2009
Number of Pages: 200
This book is useful to teachers because it incorporates childrens literature into a reading
program. It shows how to use a given book with a variety of readers. It is compiled various
articles by different authors to help explain the use of childrens literature and how to use it.

Book
Title: Teaching Reading in the 21st Century
Authors: Michael F. Graves, Connie Juel, Bonnie B. Graves, Peter Dewitz
City of Publication: N/A
Publisher: Pearson Education Canada
Year or Publication: 2010
Number of Pages: 560
This book gives teachers a plan to help them make students into lifelong readers. It helps show
teachers how to help developed students critical thinking skills through reading. Each chapter is
developed to help move the teacher through the process and include ideas of observing
classrooms and talking with parents and other teachers. I think this book would be a great deal of
help because a lot of children now are almost forced to read as a punishment rather than for
pleasure. Children are forced to read certain things for school and are not given as much choice
in their reading. This book will help develop their reading, but also giving them some say.

Title: Teaching Them to Read

Author: Dolores Durkin
City of Publication: Des Moines, IA
Publisher: Allyn & Bacon
Year of Publication: 1992
Number of Pages: 475
This book provides information about reading and reading instruction for students from
kindergarten through the elementary grades. Teachers can use this book as a reference when
having to teach reading at the given levels. The book is broken down into the reading process,
the teacher, how reading is being done, silently or orally, developing literacy skills for students,
developing in text skills, content knowledge, comprehension skills, etc. This book would be
especially useful for new teachers because it breaks it all down simply.

Characteristics of a reliable source:

-

The legitimacy of the website

o This simply means does the site look real- is it linked to a trusted institution,
business; does it have references to other legitimate sites or works, how the
website is developed, when was it developed, etc.
Are there a lot of commercials all over the website?

o These kinds of sites are usually not as reliable because anyone can make a website
and commercials or ads will pop up all over it.
Look at the end of the web link
o Does it end in .edu, .com, .net, .html
o The ending of a site can give an initial indicator of the validity of a site
Check the date
o Steer away from older sites because there is probably something more up to date
on an given topic
Look at the authors
o Authors are proud of their work so they should have their name on their journal,
book, etc.
o Avoid anonymous authors for this reason
