It was the day before Halloween, that strange American holiday when some children and adults like to
__frighten [V] each other by wearing scary costumes. Others try to
bedazzle [V] the people
around them by wearing colorful, exotic masks made of feathers and fake jewels.
Unfortunately, the first student who walked into the classroom groaned loudly. The excessive heat
that the class had
formerly [ADV] experienced in SH 216 was continuing. Once again, it was
over 90 degrees in the classroom. Unfortunately, this situation had become predictable [ADJ].
So by Wednesday, some students had put on lighter clothes in the morning and came prepared for
the heat. Others showed their __discontent [N] with this miserable situation by putting their heads
down on their desks.
Sitting in class was like sitting under the _radiant [ ADJ] sun on a hot summer afternoon in August.
The sensation [N] of hot, dry air on the skin made the students feel tired. Some longed [V]
for a cold drink of water. Others began to fantasize [N] about sitting on a beach, imagining a cool
breeze blowing in off the water. Trischa also experienced a feeling of nostalgia [N], thinking back
fondly to the many days she had spent as a child walking along the windy lakeshore. She started
walking back and forth across the classroom, vigorously [ADV] fanning the students and trying to
create a little breeze. But even that didnt help much.
Sweating in the heat, everyone realized how much they had taken for granted [V] that UICs
heating and cooling systems would work well. UIC had established [V] standards for how cool or
warm classrooms should be, but it was evident that things were not going well. So, after experiencing
several days of unpleasant heat, the teachers came to the
realization [N] that something
needed to be done about the situation. They finally called the UIC maintenance team, and waited
_impatiently [ADV] for something to be done about the situation. But in their hearts and
souls [N] they feared that the response to their request would not yield quick results.

This exciting story will be continued in the days ahead.
