Riddle of the week

You can hear it

You can see it

You can touch it
But you can not stop it..
What is it?

THINK, PAIR, SHARE.

In groups of 2 or 3 share with your classmates what
you think the answer to the riddle might be.

It Is

Genesis 2:5-7 (The Message)

At the time God made Earth and Heaven, before any grasses
or shrubs had sprouted from the groundGod hadnt yet
sent rain on Earth, nor was there anyone around to work the
ground (the whole Earth was watered by underground
springs)God formed Man out of dirt from the ground and
blew into his nostrils the breath of life. The Man came alive
a living soul!

Today We Will
1. Learn new vocabulary
2. Identify important parts or structures of the
respiratory system

The Respiratory system is

the way we breathe by taking oxygen into our
bodies and releasing carbon dioxide out of our
bodies

Oxygen In

Carbon Dioxide Out

Todays new Words

Nasal Cavity
Pharynx
Larynx
Trachea

Bronchi
Lungs

Diaphragm

Nasal Cavity
This is a large region that begins at your nostrils (nose)
and extends back the length of your head. This area is
filled with the air we breath, mucous and little hairs.

The hair and mucous act as a filter keeping harmful

materials out of our bodies.

Pharynx

The Pharynx is also known as the throat. The Pharynx is

the opening to both the digestive system and the
respiratory system.

The Pharynx includes a little flap which separates two

tubes, the Larynx for the Respiratory system and the
Esophagus for the digestive system. This flap is called the

Epiglottis

Larynx

The Larynx, starts at the back of the tongue and connects

until the trachea.
The Larynx is a region where many small and skinny
ligaments are found. Some of these ligaments allow us to
talk, they are called our vocal cords.

Trachea
is also known as the windpipe.
When you cough the trachea uses small C shaped muscles to
push the unwanted material up and out of your body.

Bronchi
From the Trachea or Wind pipe the bronchi branch off in
two directions to from the Bronchi tree.
The Bronchi are tubes which the air we breathe in goes into
the lunges.

Lungs
Lungs are one of the largest organs in the body. Each lunghis
cone shaped and extends from your diaphragm and reaches a
point near your collarbone.
The Lungs job is to transport oxygen which we breathe in and
transfer to the blood. At the same time the lungs take carbon
dioxide away from the blood and outside of the body.

Diaphragm
Is a big muscle which separates the chest and the belly
regions of our bodies.
The Diaphragm applies needed pressure to our lungs that
allows us to breathe in and out.

Respiratory System Day 2

What do you remember from yesterday?

In your table groups,

brain storm what you
remember from last
class about the
Respiratory system.
Could be anything
we did.

Here is my list of what we did yesterday:

Riddle
Genesis 2:5-7,
Oxygen In and Carbon Dioxide out

Terms: Nasal Cavity, Pharynx, Larynx,

Trachea, Bronchi, Lungs, Diaphragm
Youtube clip at the end.

Genesis 2:5-7 (The Message)

1.Nasal Cavity (nose)

2.Mouth
3.Larynx
4.Lungs
5.Bronchi
6.Diaphragm
7.Pharynx (throat)
8.Trachea (wind pipe)
9.Bronchi
10. Bronchioles
11. Alveoli

Today we will
1. All build our own models of the respiratory system
2. If you complete the model, there is a word search you
can do or you may finish your labeling sheet
3. You need to pay close attention today because I will
have a quiz for you tomorrow

Activity Time
For Todays Activity you each will need
1 pen or pencil
1 balloon
1 piece of plastic from a grocery bag
1 plastic bottle
1 elastic band

Mr. Toporowski, will give you further instructions soon.

Think, Pair, Share

Can you identify our respiratory terms in the lung
model?
