Unit Title: An Algebra Storybook

Name: Fiona Rizzo

Content Area: Mathematic Algebra I

Grade Level: 8th to 9th Grade

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

A-CED Create equations that describe numbers or relationships. [Linear, quadratic, and exponential (integer inputs only); for A.CED.3 linear
only]

A-CED 1. Create equations and inequalities in one variable including ones with absolute value and use them to solve problems. Include equations
arising from linear and quadratic functions, and simple rational and exponential functions. CA
A-CED 2. Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and
scales.
Big Ideas:
Use algebraic equations to solve word problem
Unit Goals and Objectives:
Students can transform word problems into algebra equations and solve for the variables (1 or 2).
Students can see the relationship between two variables that are given in the word problems.
Unit Summary:
This unit plan is incorporate the Algebra course with the "create equations that describe the numbers or relationship" unit. This unit will be addressing how to transform
word problems into equations and solve for the variables. There will also be videos with stories for students to get idea to create their own stories. In addition, students can
use internet to search for YouTube videos and pictures to add into their story. The activity would end up to be a group project. In the beginning students will learn the
relationship between one or two variables from simple sentences. I will gradually increase the words and sentences into paragraphs. I will give students exercises to do for
them to get comfortable with word problems. They will also learn to use their own words to create equations. In the end, I will divide them into groups and they will work on
videos or actual storybooks to use algebra equations to tell a story.
Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:
Ask students to take the Quizlet quiz to review the
terms they have learned before.

Lesson 1

Formative:
Throughout the lesson, students will do various web
exercises to see how they progress in the lesson.

Summative:
In the end, students will create a word problems
project where students need to tell a story through
math equations.

Student Learning Objective:

Students will learn to
transform word problems
into algebra equations and
solve for the variables (1 or
2).

Acceptable Evidence:
Students understand what
the word problem is asking
and successfully use the right
operation for the word
problems.

Instructional Strategies:
Communication
Collection
Collaboration
Presentation
Organization
Interaction

Lesson Activities:
Teacher lecture with the guided notes. Students are required to complete the
guided notes and the exercises shown on both the powerpoint and the note.

Acceptable Evidence:
Students are able to create an
equation with the information
given in the problem and
understand the terms and
concept.

Instructional Strategies:
Communication
Collection
Collaboration
Presentation
Organization
Interaction

Lesson Activities:
Webquest activity where students will go to the website provided in the
worksheet and find the answer. Student will gain understanding what an equation
is and how to create one through the activity.

Acceptable Evidence:
Students are able to solve
equations with two variables
and able to translate word
into mathematic information.

Instructional Strategies:
Communication
Collection
Collaboration
Presentation
Organization
Interaction

Lesson Activities:
Graphic Organizer Decision Map. Students will use the worksheet to complete
each word problems. Student must show understanding how they understand the
problems by using the decision map. Also, students will show mastery on word
problems by getting the correct answers with the correct steps.

Lesson 2
Student Learning Objective:
Students can solve for the
variables through the
equations they created.

Lesson 3
Student Learning Objective:
Students can see the
relationship between two
variables that are given in the
word problems.
