of The mission of the Ministry of Gender Equality & Family is to make a society
where all family members are happy and sharing together.
&
The most prominent controversy could be their policies focusing too much on
issues regarding female rather than gender equality in general. It is in fact being
criticized for promoting inequality with its biased policies toward women
resource development, womens rights protection and better treatment for
women.
However, not much actions were taken regarding some significant womens right
protection issues. In case of Giji Village, the Korean government created
prostitution group for the United States Forces in Korea during 1970~1990s for
dollar collection. The government promised for welfare and shelters to the
prostitutes, but the promise was never implemented. While the victims are filing
lawsuit against the government for compensation, the Ministry of Gender
Equality & Family expresses no comments or actions on the issue.
On the other hand, the public believe the Ministry is spending its funds on
irrelevant matters. The most representative case is the Shutdown policy,
banning children under 16 from singing in to online games from 12:00am to
6:00am. The intended effect of this policy was to protect the health of young
children because the work of the Ministry involves some dimension in Family
and Child protection. However, the policy is being condemned for being
ineffective and wasting efforts to unnecessary actions while neglecting other
important issues.
