1. Objective(s): At the end of the lesson, students will be able to apply what they learn
from matting into future art projects. They will be able to measure and cut out a mat
board properly. They will also be able to use the right tools to cut out a mat board.

3. Learning Target(s): At the end of the lesson, I can measure and cut out a mat board
properly to use for future photo displays.

4. Assessment: The students will be assessed by applying the method I model by sizing and
cutting out their own mat board.
5. Materials: mat board, mat board cutter, sand paper, ruler, and pencil

6. Introduction/Anticipatory Set:
Start by the foundations of having a nice display for a picture
Go more into depth on matting
And tell them they will learn to properly cut out a mat board

Why do artists use mat board?
8. ****Step-by-Step Lesson Process:****
I will first start out by introducing myself and what I will be doing with the class
Then, I will grab the students attention about why its important to have a nice display for a
picture
Ask questions. Direction teaching (5 mins)

Then, I will ask the students to gather around a table so I can demonstrate to them the types of
mat boards, the materials and how to properly cut out a mat board.
What types of mat board there are, black with black core, black with white core, and grey with
white core.
What materials they will need to properly cut out a mat board. Mat board, straight cutter, sizes
of different mat boards ruler, and sand paper.
Then, I will start by picking a size to cut out and apply that size to a blank mat board.
Then, I will begin by telling them how to properly use the mat board cutter.
Then, I will cut out the inside of the mat board and give them reminders along the way.
Then, I will explain to them that they will do a short activity on cutting out their own mat
board to assess if they understand how to cut out a mat board properly.
(each step I will ask if they need me to repeat the step or go into depth on what Ive done or if
they simply have questions)

I will assess them on their understanding by checking their journal entry and if they may have
questions they can always ask. ASSESS/Checking for understanding (10 mins)
Lastly, Ill ask the students again why its important to properly cut out a mat board as an exit
ticket.
