In1920Spainwasaconstitutionalmonarchistcountry,RuledbyAlfonsoXIII.Thegovernmentwas
corruptandinefficient.Underhisandthegovernmentrulerebellionafterrebellionbrokeout.
SpecificallyoneinSpanishMorocco,anarmywassenttoendarebellion,therebellionwascalmed,
butitwasanexampleofhowcorruptandincapableSpainsleadershipwas.In1923GeneralPrimo
deRiveratookcontrolofSpaininanefforttocontrolalltherebellion.Riverawasnotadictatorand
hisrulehelpedSpain.Underhisrulehelpedcreatemorejobsintheindustrialproduction.Inthe30s
TheGreatDepressionhitSpainhard,UnemploymentwasterriblyhighandRiverahadtowayto
helpgetSpainoutofthecrisis,hedecidedtoresign.Spainwasdeclaredarepublicandmonarchy
wasbanishedfromthecountry.InApril1931electionsweheldtofindanewruler.InJanuary1932
agroupofsoldiersleadbythePrimeMinister,ManuelAzana,triedtoovertakethegovernment,but
failed.InFebruary1936anotherelectionwasheldonManuelAzanagainedpowerofSpain.The
militaryunderGeneralFrancocommandtookcontrolofSpanishMoroccoafteroverthrowingthe
Citizengovernment.HisnextfocustoinvademainlandSpain,toinstituteamilitarygovernmentand
toeliminateallthoseinvolvedinleftwingpolitics.Theleftwingpoliticianswerentgoingtoletthis
happenthereforestartingtheSpanishCivilWarinJulyof1936.
