What is Transport Engineering?

It is an application of technological principles
to planning, functional design, operation, and
management of transport facilities in order to
provide safe, efficient, affordable, rapid,
economical, environmentally compatible
movement of people and goods.

Divisions
There are 6 main divisions in Transport
Engineering:
1. Aerospace
2. Highway
3. Pipeline and waterway
4. Port
5. Urban Transport
6. Coastal and ocean

Job Description
1. It is involved in planning, designing,
constructing, maintaining and operating
transportation facilities,
2. Determining the size of the facility, materials
needed, thickness of pavements,
3. Etc.

Relation with other Civil Engineering Majors

1.

Water Resources

: in terms of the making of pipelines, waterways,

ports, coastal and ocean transport facilities.

2.

Geotechnical

: in terms of the making of underground

transport facilities (ie. Waterways, pipelines, etc.)
and also for making public transportation facilities.

3.

Building Construction : Basically everything, because they are involved in

calculating all sorts of loads and/or forces that may
occur to the related facility in order to make a
strong and firm structure.

4.

Environment

: Basically everything since we have to construct an

environmentally compatible facility. But we mostly
relate in terms of the making of waterways,
pipelines, ports, etc.

5.

CM

: Basically everything, since they manage all work

timeline, and determine which materials are
suitable with the budget.

Relation to Waste of Jakarta

1.

Why are transport engineers related to the waste of Jakarta?

Because, we are responsible for transporting the waste from household
and industrial wastes to the temporary disposal site to the final disposal
site.

2. What is the main problem?

First of all, the main routes used to deliver the waste are mostly
defective . As a result, the waste disposal trip is behind the designated
schedule.
On the other hand, the government spent majority of the fund to hire
private sectors to manage the waste disposal. However, the outcome is
not equal to the income.
To sum up our previous explanation, the main problem is that the
waste disposal cycle is way behind the designated schedule. Hence,
waste starts to pile up everywhere around the city.

Transport Engineers Role

Manage better waste distribution system
Provide garbage bins in public transportation
and public transport
Design efficient and renewable forms of
transport
