English Language Arts Description:

The fourth grade language arts standards focus on students reading a variety of texts in
different genres. The standards provide instruction in skills necessary for students to form an
understanding of the text and interpret information from the text. Students are using the
information to learn more about the culture of the United States and the world around them. In
fourth grade, students will use a variety of strategies; such as, comprehending, interpreting, and
evaluating.
The unit over the Civil War incorporates the language arts standards with helping
students understanding the different domains of social studies and the focus of creating
relationships and increasing skills in the language arts area. Students will be explaining
relationships between major events, comparing and contrasting events, creating presentations and
writing several pieces of information. The students will meet in literature circles to discuss texts
focused on the Civil War and different perspectives. Students will use their skills of reading and
interpreting meaning from the text to discuss different issues and information provided.
Alongside, students will be working on creating informative and narrative writings about the
Civil War. Students will use the steps of writers workshop to better understand the process of
writing.
The lesson for language arts focuses on students being able to explain relationships
between different events. The students will use events from the Civil War and describe the
relationships that exist between the different events. This connects the students work with using
textual information that has been read during class and information that was present during
lessons. Also, students will presented with the option of choosing activities based on their
interest to better understand and describe relationships between different events.

4.RN.2.3 Explain the relationships between events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical,
scientific, or technical text, based on specific information in the text.
4.SL.4.2 Create oral presentations that maintain a clear focus, using multimedia to enhance the
development of main ideas and themes that engage the audience.
4.W.2.1 Write legibly in print or cursive, forming letters and words that can be read by others.
4.RL.2.1 Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what a text says explicitly and
when drawing inferences from the text.
4.SL.2.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and
teacher-led) on grade-appropriate topics and texts, building on others ideas and expressing
personal ideas clearly.
4.SL.2.1 Listen actively and adjust the use of spoken language (e.g., conventions, style,
vocabulary) to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and for different purposes.
4.W.3.1 Write persuasive compositions in a variety of forms
