Hughie ODonoghue

Hughie ODonoghue is an Irish painter that was born in Manchester. He is an

expressionist painting, focusing on themes such as World War 2 and human suffering in
general. He is often regarded as an abstract expressionism painter. He is most well known for
his oil paintings. His color scheme varies from painting to painting, but generally he uses darker
colors of greys, browns, golden yellows, and blues, with some brighter, more vivid pop colors
thrown in to help create an emphasis point. The subjects he chooses to focus on include World
War II and family memories (which are often tied to the war). His technique is very unique. In
general, he overlays several coats of paint on top of each other. He often does not smooth out
the painting, allowing the audience to see the many layers and colors peek through. The
textures achieved in his paintings often resemble smoke, with a hazy feel that gives the viewer
the feeling that theyre looking through a foggy memory (which is what ODonoghue often
intended).
There are so many things that I adore about Hughie ODonoghue. I had the pleasure of
actually seeing one of his pieces live at the UUMA art museum, A Monument in Rouen. I loved
the colors, and the texture drew my eyes around the piece. However, the things that I loved the
most about it was that there are hidden meanings. In the particular piece that I viewed live
contained, very faintly, the names of the different towns that his father fought in during the war.
They are so faint, and ODonoghue said that he painted them like that because he wanted to
capture the idea of seeing them through smoke. I love the idea of hiding things in plain sight.
The colors are captivating. I adore history, and so, I love the topics he chooses. I also love the
style in which he paints. Normally, I dont like abstract
images, but I love
ODonoghues.

Salvador Dali

and is well known for his inventive and abstract ideas. Often regarded as eccentric, Dali was
often considered a head of his time. He was an important figure in the surrealism movement
that helped shift the focus of art to more imaginative realms. While focusing on some realistic
features, Dalis artwork is often exaggerated or contains elements of fantasy. His subject matter
varied, but some of his most famous themes include memory, the progression of time, and the
damage of the industry on the environment. His color schemes were often bright and vibrant,
but some of them had darker schemes. Some of the prevalent colors in his pieces were browns,
blues, and greens.
There were many things that drew me to Dali. I love his creativity and his lack of fear of
being thought of as weird. He did art that he loved and produced some very original works. I
also love the play between abstract and realism that Dali often expressed with in his works. The
items are realistic enough that you know what youre looking at, but abstract enough that they
turn your perception of the world as you know it on its head. The last thing that I like about Dalis
work is he varies his subject matter. His art addresses a wide array of topics and issues, which
is something that appeals to me. I like to see that an artist can vary what they focus on.
