STATEMENT FROM SENATOR ADRIANO ESPAILLAT ON

PRESIDENT OBAMAS EXECUTIVE ORDER
To the Presidents critics, there has never been, and never will be a good time to undertake
immigration reform. But to hardworking immigrant families who have been driven underground
by our moral and political failure to pass immigration reform, each passing day is a missed
opportunity for change.
President Obama deserves tremendous praise for action that will meaningfully benefit
individuals, families and entire communities, and for incurring the political costs he will
inevitably face in retaliation for this brave act.
Tonights announcement will bring new opportunity to 5 million patriotic immigrants who have
made this country their home. And while it may temporarily inflame xenophobic anti-immigrant
sentiment, the results will ultimately disprove the smears and superstitions that have been
unfairly leveled at immigrants throughout the Presidents time in office.
Immigration opponents will not be the only ones mobilizing immigration reform supporters
must demonstrate the depth of support for this executive order. That's why I will be leading a
march next week in New York City to support the Presidents actions and ensure the
immigrant communitys voice is not lost in this public debate.
The Presidents actions have not replaced the need for broader immigration reform at both the
state and federal level. But he has dramatically furthered this defining civil rights issue, and
shown a firm humanitarian commitment at a time when congressional gridlock has diminished
the immigrant communitys hopes for a better life. I join millions of Americans U.S. citizens
and undocumented immigrants alike in thanking the President for his actions this evening.

SOBRE ORDEN EJECUTIVA DEL PRESIDENTE OBAMA
"Para los crticos del Presidente, nunca ha sido y nunca ser un buen momento para llevar a cabo
una reforma migratoria. Sin embargo, para las familias inmigrantes trabajadoras que han sido
empujadas a una existencia subterrnea por nuestro fracaso moral y poltico en aprobar una
reforma migratoria, cada da que pasa es una oportunidad perdida para efectuar el cambio.

El presidente Obama merece ser elogiado por esta accin significativa que beneficiar a
individuos, familias y comunidades enteras y por incurrir en los costos polticos
que inevitablemente enfrentar en represalia por este valiente acto.
El anuncio de esta noche traer nueva oportunidad a 5 millones de inmigrantes patriotas que han
hecho de este pas su hogar. Y si bien puede inflamar temporalmente el sentimiento antiinmigrante xenfoba, en ltima instancia, los resultados van a desmentir las difamaciones y
supersticiones que han sido niveladas injustamente a los inmigrantes durante todo el tiempo que
el Presidente ha estado en el cargo.
Los oponentes de la inmigracin no sern los nicos que se movilizan - los defensores de la
reforma migratoria deben demostrar la profundidad de su apoyo a esta orden ejecutiva. Es por
eso que encabezar una marcha la prxima semana en la ciudad de Nueva York para
apoyar las acciones del Presidente y garantizar que la voz de la comunidad inmigrante no
se pierda en este debate pblico.
Las acciones del Presidente no han sustituido la necesidad de una reforma migratoria ms amplia
- tanto a nivel estatal y federal. Pero l ha impulsado de manera dramtica este tema definitorio
de los derechos civiles y con ella demuestra un firme compromiso humanitario en momentos en
que la parlisis del Congreso ha disminuido las esperanzas de la comunidad inmigrante para una
vida mejor. Me uno a millones de estadounidenses - ciudadanos estadounidenses e inmigrantes
indocumentados por igual - para dar las gracias al Presidente por sus acciones de esta noche.
