Genetic engineering is a more recent scientific advancement in the world today. It has
the potential to do great things, yet its consequences are unforeseeable. It is also clawing its way
into different fields, such as food production, the medical field, and even commercial sales.
Genetically modified foods are foods produced from organisms and plants that have had
changes introduced to their DNA. These changes allow complete control of the traits of the
plants. They can be made to have a certain taste, ripen at a certain time, and grow to a specific
size. They can be pest-resistant, frost-resistant, and heat resistant. With all of their new
qualities, GM foods can be mass produced to feed thousands of people. However, for now their
effects are unknown. Eating these GM foods may affect our health negatively.
Genetic engineering is a method of introducing desirable traits into animals using
recombinant DNA technology (fda.gov). These animals often have undergone induced
mutations, or have been cloned. There are many animal welfare concerns on how to establish the
ethical limitations of cloning. There are also many indignations on the physical and
psychological well-being of the animals in question (mspca.org).

Genetic engineering is humans is not used today, but its future possibilities are endless.
It is thought that in the future people will be able to be engineered with certain desirable qualities
such as appearance, abilities, and long life. This arises many ethical questions as some people
believe that all things were created how they are for a reason and shouldn't be changed. Also, it
is not clear if the modified people in question will suffer from behavioral or development
problems. Genetic modification is an imperfect science that yields imperfect results
(mspca.org). With the advancement of genetic engineering, it is only possible to imagine the
ways that people in the future might modify themselves. They may be able to choose what their
children will look like before the child is even born. If all humans in the future are genetically
modified, whether with animal DNA or human DNA, it arises the question of what will happen
when there are no genetically pure people left.
Genetic engineering is used to modify different organisms DNA, and sometimes create
strange hybrids. Theoretically, it is a very posivite concept that can help people. However, in use
it may affect people and the environment negatively. Many ask the question of if genetic
engineering is ethical.
