DESCRIPTION OF COURSE
This course is designed to help students prepare for advanced readings and translations in the
Spanish Language. Students must have completed four semesters of undergraduate courses in
order to attain the intermediate competency, necessary to function in this course. Successful
completion of this class is equivalent to the Language Proficiency Test). Course work will
include intensive grammar review, basic practice of translation, readings and discussions of
complex texts of Literature from Spain and Latin America as well as selections from the arts and
history of ideas.
Evaluation: The final grade will based on the following factors: Attendance, preparation of
assigned translation texts and final exam.
REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS:
De la Vega, Sara and Carmen Salazar. Avanzando: Gramática española y lectura. New
York: John Wiley and Sons, Inc. (latest edition).
RECOMMENDED MATERIAL:
A Spanish-English Dictionary (e.g. University of Chicago, Oxford, Larousse)
Kendris, Christopher and Theodore Kendris. 501 Spanish Verbs. New York: Baron’s
Educational Series, 2007.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EVALUATION CRITERIA:
During the course Spanish literary excerpts will be assigned for translation as homework,
a few translation quizzes will be given in class, mostly for the self-evaluation of the
students’ progress. The instructor will keep track of attendance, participation, progress in
translation skills, homework, and quiz results. At the end of the semester an evaluation
of all the above components plus the final exam will be factored in for the grade.
