Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

How to use this booklet

You will need to complete every page of this booklet, and all sections / questions
required.
Assessment criteria for Distinction grade;
LO2
Plans will show a full consideration of movement and continuity, perspective, point of view,
transitions and special effects.
Precise and workable planning of timing and synchronisation to a soundtrack will be produced.
It will be clear at this stage, from the documentation, what the finished piece will look and
sound like.
Learners will follow industry conventions and terminology used in storyboard production
correctly.
Plans for the construction of models, sets and props will be realistic and clear.
Drawings, script and storyboard will all show a creative interpretation of the idea.

LO3:
The documentation linked to the production will be full and detailed and there will be evidence
that the production management and scheduling of the project has been effective and carried
out in a professional manner. The techniques used in the production of the work are likely to
be related to an understanding of current trends in the industry.

Both LO2 and LO3

In all practical activity learners will be capable of working autonomously and effectively. They
will work on their own initiative, will not need constant support or supervision, will give the work
their full commitment, work positively and cooperatively with others, and meet deadlines. In
other words, they will have the kind of self-management skills that would be expected of them
in a professional context. Note also that this criterion should not be taken to mean that learners
do not seek advice or that they work without discussing things with their tutor, but rather that
they are not dependent upon the support of others and that when they take advice they weigh
it carefully for themselves.

Planning
Brainstorm / mind map (add extra pages if necessary)

Attach a 400 word treatment of your idea

My idea would be to do a TV advert using stop motion technique. My idea is to do an Advert
on Sure for Men advertising Sure for Men. The character is made out of blue platecine, I have
one human character who wakes up and realises he smells bad, to then open his mirror door
and see the blue character holding a can of Sure, it then goes to Blue doing skill on a set I will
make with a football such as rolling the ball over his head ect. Nick (human character) will
then spray the deodorant and look very good.
The meaning of this advert and USP is to show that when your smelling bad and looking bad
Sure for men is the right deodorant for you and can make you feel fresh, and look good. I
would like to also advertise the conncetion between the blue character and Nick so it suggests
that you can have this virtual relationship with a can of deodorant and it will always be there

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

for you through your worries. The animation will be in Stop-Motion Format with featuring in live
action

How will you meet the requirements of your brief?

I will meet the requirements of my brief by planning what I need to do. I am meeting
the requirements as I am doing stop motion technique as I think this works well and
can show a strong connection, the production will be 30 seconds long and will. In my
Brief the Logo of Sure must be featured, this will be used by the can and at the end
of the production. The Advert will be snappy and entertaining and will advertise the
main selling points and also send a message to the audience.

Risk assessment: Are there any health and safety issues you may encounter?

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

There will be Health and Safety issues I may encounter but I plan to stop these. One
maybe that there maybe a loose wire in the studio that I could trip over easily and
hurt myself and break equipment, I plan to stop this by double checking the area I
work in. in the set I am working in the props I need to make sure are all organized
correctly and on the floor of the studio as this could mean also falling over and
breaking equipment. In a Film set there are bound to be Health and Safety issues, I
will double check to see if the environment is safe to work in and make any changes
if I need to.

Discuss any legal issues you may face. Eg; sound, plagiarism, age restrictions
I may face copyright issues if I take copyrighted music and be asked to change this,
but this could change if I send a email to the respected owners and parties. Or by
using Royalty-free music therefore there will be no copyright issues as the music is
free and not owned by anyone.

Use of possible formats

Circle which of the following formats your animation will take;
stop-frame techniques
time lapse photography
plasticine animation

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Claymation
using found objects
modelling
puppetry
combined formats

Why are you using that particular format?

I am using this particular format because it is required we use this. I also feel it is a good
technique to use you are applying a lot of skills together such as photography, organization,
creativity and efficiency. I also will come into my own personal skills in terms of making my
character and making it look good and professional, I am them required to use patience skills
skills and make sure everyone one of my photos is spot on and the animation runs smoothly
itself.

What are the different possibilities you could explore using this format?
By using Claymation, this enables me to create anything I want to create, and attatch anything
I want to attatch to it, I can also bend it to however I want and move it however I wish to use
it. This will allow me to take photos in a number of possible ways and really investigate to see
what I can do for my production.

What are the limitations of using this format? (i.e what problems/ obstacles might you have?)
The limitations of using this format are that something could easily go wrong, a arm may fall
of for example and this require me to make a new one or attatch it back, but when taking
photos there may be a drastic change and not run smoothly, another problem may be that my
model may fall over in the middle of production and it will be very hard for to find exactly where
the model was last time which could be a problem for my production and the smoothness it
will run at.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

What imaginative or inventive animations have you seen which use this format?

I have seen many animation which are using the same format as I am doing, they look
very clever and have seen some very good ideas for stop motion, my stop motion itself
contains humans so the link and examples are some examples of animation using
human stop motion.
Add in links and screen shots of three examples of animations using this format.

Subject
What will the subject of your animation be?
The Subject of my advert is Deodorant, the deodorant will be advertised to make sure look
like it is the best deaodorant of any and will enhance sport performance, but mainly smell and
keep hydrated skin for 48 hours. m

Storyline
Describe the storyline of your animation. What events will happen to your characters?
Nick (human) wakes up and feels dirty and looks bad, so as anyone would when they wake
up, they go to bathroom. Nick looks at himself in the mirror and realizes that he looks very
bad, but then suddenly a wift of his own scent comes to him and realizes that he smells very
bad. Deodorant is needed, to his rescue comes blue when he suddenly appears behind the
mirror cabnet and is already there ready to hand over what is needed, the Sure. Blue is then
seen doing skill with a football which nick sees and thinks I need this, with this deodorant if
you spray this you will be like me effectively is what he is saying. Nick grasps the can of
deodorant and sprays, smelling like a flower, all of a sudden nick is now looking great thanks
the deodorant, not only does he smell good, but he now looks good to!

Characters
What characters will be in your animation?
Blue My Blue animated character who features in the advert with the sure can and on the
football pitch
Nick Nick is the poor man who smells and looks very bard until sure comes to his rescue

Movement of characters

How are you going to make your characters move?

I will make my character move by using stop-motion Technique to create the illusion of
movement, I will do this by moving my character slightly, then taking a photo and putting all
the photos together on Premiere ate 1 frame per second.

What is the purpose of an armature?

The purpose of armature is to create the movement for computer animation, so for example
this would be good for something like a dragon for example where you can produce the
movement of the dragon which then your computer will recognice and you can base the
animation movement of the dragon of that. It is applied using kinematic chains for virtual or
human characters.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Will you use them for your characters?
I will be using armature in my models blues arms and legs so I can bend and move it easily
and not worry about it breaking or falling off which will help me in my production

By using armature wire

Mood board
Create a mood board showing what look your animation will have. Add images showing ideas
of mise-en-scene, characters, costumes and colours that will be present in the different shots.

Audio and Soundtrack

What audio will you have for your animation?
I will have audio for the music, I will pick a suitable theme to my advert which fits the genre,
my advert will look very cartoony so I will pick a song which suits this perfectly and which can
connect to the audience.
Take That These Days (when blue comes in)
Give it your all Instruimental (start when nick wakes up)
Cheering (middle of production, when hes doing skill)

Complete the sound list, detailing what sounds you will use, where you will source them, what
equipment you will need to record them and when you will use them in your animation.
You will need to design your own soundtrack. You cannot use copyrighted music, and it must
be more than simply adding a track.

What actions will need sound effects?

The only sound effect I will have is football fans cheering for when blue is on the pitch with a
football to make this feel more of a realistic production .

Audience
Define the following characteristics of your audience;
Gender
Male

Age
14-50 year old men

Interests
The intererests of my audience maybe sport as it is a sport deodorant. They may like to do
other sporting activities such as running or going to the gym. The audiences interest aswell
may be for day to day people who use Sure for men on a day to day basis to keep hydrated
skin and not sweat and smell bad.

What forms of animation might they already watch?

They may watch cartoon animation such as programmes like South Park and Family Guy as
there are more towards the Male Audience, these are funny programmes late at night which
the jokes are towards the male audience and are something which men would laugh at.

What images do you think they enjoy watching?

They would enjoy watching active images, with things happening such as sport, sports
such as football, golf and tennis with a normal set of colours not to bright, not to dark,

What might they consider distasteful or offensive?

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

They may consider sexual, sexual or racism comments as offensive and may be sensitive on
the topic as there is a strong chance it could be in relation to them or someone else they are
related to which could cause issues.

How will you ensure that your animation will suit your chosen audience?
I will ensure my production will suit my audience because I am basing mine around a male
audience, a deodorant which every male will use, and a sporty deodorant in Sure for Men.
This will suit the audience even more because I am using football in this which will engage
with a massive football audience, but also aswell I am sending a message will a lot of males
can relate to that they start sweating and smell bad, and Sure for men is there to help us, and
sure can really improve our overall day to day performance. The look of the Animation will suit
the audience because it will be in a cool comical way with good comical music which will suit
the animation perfectly. This will also appeal to many audiences because there will be a great
chemesty between the can and person in possession of that can.

How will they physically watch your animation? (i.e in an exhibition format, on screen,
projection, online?)
My animation will be watched online and in a screen format on television because it will be
advertised between programmes and people on YouTube before they watch there videos.

Frame Rates
What is the duration of your animation in minutes? (minimum 30 seconds)
Around 720 photos, 24fps

In seconds? 16 seconds (stop motion) 21 (nick)

How many frames per second for video?

25 fps

There are 60 seconds in a minute. How many frames (ie. Individual photos) will you
need to take?
My production will be 30 seconds long, so therefore I will need to take around 720 photos.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Lighting Design

Where will you be photographing your animation?

Studio
Does it have natural daylight?
Lighting from a Light in Studio, I can alter my settings easily

If so, you will need to block this out. Explain why.

Do you have a constant light source(s) such as a lamp?

I will have a bright LED light lamp in the same position over my animation, this is good as I
can also set the light settings to how I want

Where will you place your light source(s) to create interesting effects?
I will place my light source over my production and it will stay there

(LO3)

Frame numbers
You will need to label your images as frames
The first 24 frames will be written as;
0_1
0_2 etc etc

Ensure your clips are labeled as such. Screen shot the folder your clips are in, and copy the

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Dope sheets
A dope sheet is an animation tool which helps a animator organise the animation shot-by-shot.
This gives the camera operator instructions on each shot type and how many frames this will
be used for.
A dope sheet is usually split into 5 different sections.

To indicate what action occurs on which frame number

To see what action is happening in this shot.
To see what dialogue used in this scene.
To show what level of animation is happening.
To give camera instructions (angle).

For

example;

Because you will be working with video, you will be using 30fps. You will need to complete a
dope sheet for EVERY SECOND of your animation.
i.e, if you make a 30 second animation, you will need to complete 30 dope sheets.
This will be a time-consuming task, but it will help you understand what will need to happen
in each of the shots you take. The higher marks will come from a detailed and careful collection
of dope sheets. For example, if your characters speaks, you will need to show the mouth
forming every shape in order to look effective.
