Rural School

Leadership
Academy (RSLA)

In our rural regions the demand for committed effective individuals to lead schools is
very high. To respond to this need and maximize the leadership potential of our alumni,
Teach For America created the Rural School Leadership Academy (RSLA) to support
alumni on the pathway to school leadership positions in our rural regions. Participants in
the year-long program learn early school leadership skills and deepen their exposure to
the power of the role of the principal, while building a powerful national network of
aspiring school leaders in rural communities.
What Is It?
One week of intensive professional development in the summer, focused on
competency development and values based leadership, followed by 3 weekend
retreats during the year that expose participants to new rural communities & schools
and continue their professional growth.
Monthly calls focused on deepening and contextualizing the learning gained in the
live experiences.
All participants create individual growth plans focused on their ongoing development
as future school leaders.
Content is provided by Teach For America and other organizations including: TNTP,
Uncommon Schools, Inspiring Educators, and others.
Who Should Apply?
Transformational schools require committed, effective leadership at every level. Because
of this, the Rural School Leadership Academy looks for alumni who embody our core
values (transformational change, leadership, team, diversity, and respect and humility)

Rural corps members who are interested in exploring the long term possibilities of
school leadership
Rural alumni ( 1-3 years out of the corps) who are in teacher leadership or early
school leadership positions
Teach for America staff in rural regions who are working directly with teachers and
students
All applicants should have an interest in exploring school leadership as a long term
career path, and have strong leadership potential
