What impact has HIV/AIDS had on the


population of Botswana?
To describe and explain the impact of HIV/AIDS on Botswanas population growth
What is HIV/AIDS?
HIV is a virus that causes AIDS, a condition in which the
immune system is destroyed allowing life threatening
illnesses to develop and the body unable to fight against
them.
HIV is spread through unprotected sex and sharing
infected needles.
HIV became a problem in Southern Africa in the 1980s
and has caused much lower population growth rates.
Use this information (and an atlas) to write a description
of Botswana's location

GEOGRAPHY MASTERMIND
1) You will be split into groups a contestant and a question master.

2) The question master has 15-20 minutes to produce 15 questions about


HIV and AIDS in Botswana. Only 4 of those questions can be a statistics
based question (eg. What % of )
3) In the meantime the contestant will use the same information to revise
and prepare to be quizzed.
4) Contestants will then leave the room and re-enter one at a time and face
2 minutes or 15 questions from another groups question master
whichever comes first.
5) Contestants can pass on a question, but the question master can only
accept your first answer.
6) The winner is the group with the most points

Read through the information given to you. Use 4 highlighters to identify the answers to the
following questions:
1. What is HIV/AIDS?
2. What impact is it having on Botswanas population growth? (use data)
3. Why is it a problem in Botswana?
4. What is being done to deal with the problem?

Select the key points for each question and summarise the answers.
Use the information to create a powerpoint presentation that would be suitable for year 8
pupils to understand. It should be no shorter than 7 slides!
