Were going to talk about the history of Thanksgiving by discussing the arrival of the
Pilgrims on the Mayflower and Thanksgiving traditions. We will present pictures and
facts about Thanksgiving and turkeys to the students as background knowledge before
starting the project. While talking about this holiday we will show that the turkey is a
symbol of Thanksgiving by creating Hand Turkeys in class.
There will be an example of how a hand turkey is made using the prepared iMovie.

Objective 1: Have an understanding that the Pilgrims came to America

Objective 2: Know that the turkey is a symbol of Thanksgiving
Objective 3: Successfully create individual Hand Turkeys
Provide them with the knowledge they need to know for the lesson as well as supplies to
actually make the Hand Turkey.
Create- Students will create colorful, personalized Hand Turkey by using their artistic
abilities.
Apply- Students will use the knowledge they have gained to show that a turkey is a
symbol of Thanksgiving by making a Hand Turkey.
Understand- After learning the information, students will be able to make sense of the
Pilgrims immigration to America. They will also be able to identify the turkey as a
symbol of Thanksgiving.
1. Introduce the lesson by telling the class that we will be learning about turkeys and
Pilgrims since Thanksgiving is coming up.
2. Present the class with photos of Pilgrims and the Mayflower. Explain facts about
when/why they came to America.

discuss with tablemates.)

Teacher will introduce how turkey is a symbol of Thanksgiving.

Measurement
of Success

5. Once the students have this knowledge about turkeys, they will be presented with the
project of creating Hand Turkeys in Art.
6. Show students the iMovie on How to create a Hand Turkey.
7. Provide the students with paper, colored pencils and scissors.
8. Have the teacher accompany the students in making the Hand Turkey by doing it
with the class step-by-step, while also supervising.
9. After the student has finished coloring and writing their name on their Hand Turkey
they will demonstrate their understanding by writing 2-3 sentences on the back about
something they learned that day.
10. Once the Hand Turkeys are finished, the teacher will hang them up in the classroom
for other students to see!
On the back of the students Hand Turkey they will write down 2-3 sentences about
what they learned about Pilgrims and turkeys as a measurement of success and
metacognition. This can be applied to future lessons because students will learn vast
amounts of knowledge and will show what they learned by applying and summarizing it.
