1. What was the area of focus today during the lesson? What activities related to the area of focus
did the teacher include in the lesson today?
Today was a short bell schedule day for the students, so we were just there for about 20 minutes.
She decided that they best way to utilize the time that she had; was for the students to work on the
Read 180 software. The couple of kids that I sat by during the class were working on the fluency
reading zone. They were recording their readings. She likes to have the kids practice reading out
loud the script at least three times before actually recording. So I heard a lot of kids reading over
and over the same passage in order to get more familiar with the text.
2. What went well with the instruction? What did students learn?
I noticed that one of the kids was in the spelling zone while we were there. The rule for the spelling
zone is that, if you spell the word wrong; you have to look up the correct spelling in their R Books
and then write out the word five times in their reading journal. Mrs. Robinson noticed that one of
the kids in the spelling zone didnt even have their R Book or reading journal at their seat. So when
the child got a word wrong, and just moved on to the next word without writing. She went up to him
and told him what the procedure was and what he should be doing and then he wrote the word.
The student learned that you have to practice spelling in order to be good at it. What kind of stinks
is that Mrs. Robinson cannot be in 10 places at once so she sometimes doesnt notice when kids
arent following the correct procedures.
3. Explain a growth moment for yourself where you realized, learned, or confirmed something
from today dealing with student achievement in the area of reading. (phonemic awareness,
phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, before/during/after reading
A growth moment for me was in fluency. Like I said earlier the kids I was working with were all in the
reading fluency zone. It was amazing how much better their third reading of text was than their first
reading. Mrs. Robinson showed us the students growth in Lexile scores and other stats from the
software, and the students are really improving! One of the kids raised 300 Lexile points! Some
kiddos only have a score of 300. So for a student to raise that much is very impressive. Mrs.
Robinson shared with us also that there will be no more resource classes in Joplin schools. They are
wanting full inclusion. So we visited about that a lot during the 20 minutes that we were there. That
was very eye opening.

4. Describe a moment when a student grasped an idea/concept-that got it! kind of moment.
How was the teacher able to facilitate this experience? Explain the situation.
I cannot really think of another Got IT moment for the kiddos, since we were in there for such a
short period of time. The only thing I can think of is one of the girls was recording her fluency
reading and she had some words underlined because she was pronouncing them wrong. Instead of
keeping her score on the text reading she wanted to do it over again because she knew that she
could do better! Which I thought was awesome that she wanted to do her best and wasnt being
lazy and just keeping her score. That was impressive!
