State Objectives
SOL 3.1 The students will locate and identify all major waterways and regions in the united states.
SOL 3.4 -The student will develop map skills by
a) locating major rivers, lakes, and oceans
b) locating and describing the physical characteristics of each region
c) Explain how civilization has adjusted to the different regions to meet their needs
SOL 3.5 -The student will develop technological skills by:
a) Identifying key words to use in google search
b) Create place marks for waterways and regions on the United States map using google earth
c) Search for related media that thoroughly describes each region
SOL 3.6 The students will read and accurately label all the major waterways and 7 regions of the
United States map.

Media:
5 classroom computers with internet access Will be used to do Google Earth research
22 iPad 1:1 student/iPad will be used to google search related research information, using identified
key words
1 document camera used to project maps for all students as the teacher instructs
1 projection screen that is visible to all students will be used to display colorful maps
Materials:
Video- Teacher will provide a brief introductory video to entice the interest of the students
United States wall map Teacher will show students where each waterway and region is located on
the map
Colorful and descriptive maps Teacher will use the document camera to display maps
Blank map worksheets Students will locate, label, and color each region on the region map and
each waterway on the waterways map
Crayons/colored pencils used to color in each region and water way on maps
Markers used to label each region and waterway
Region Chart Students will log information found in google search

Methods:
Preparatory introduction video Video will be played for students to visually engage and draw
students attention into the subject matter
Whole Group Map Skills the teacher will use the United States wall map and the projected maps to
locate the regions and waterways of the united states. The teacher will describe the physical
characteristics of each region in the United States while going over the map
Whole Group Instruction of Group Activity The teacher will explain procedure of the group map
research activity. Each group will work collaboratively to complete the group activity successfully.
The teacher will monitor the progress of students and provide help as needed.
Whole Group Instruction of Independent Activities The teacher will explain the procedures of
individual map and research activities to be. Each student will work independently with the iPad and
displayed maps to complete activity successfully. The teacher will work alongside students as
necessary to complete the activity.
Require Learner Participation
Whole Group Map Skills:
The teacher will call students to focus their attention on the United States wall map and projected
maps. The students are asked to identify (by pointing to) each of the 7 regions as discussed in the
introductory video. The teacher will ask for any volunteers able to identify any of the waterways
(including surrounding oceans). The teacher will identify all of the major waterways and ask students
to mentally note each to be used in the independent map activity. The students will engage by
locating and identifying key points on the map.
Whole Group Instruction of Group Activities:
The teacher will explain to the class the procedure and expectations of the group activity. The teacher
will use the SMART board to guide the students with an example and how to use Google Earth. The
teacher will also explain to the students that each classroom computer is equipped with Google Earth
with an icon located on the desktop. The teacher will split the students into designated groups; with 5
students on two computers and 4 students on the remaining 3. The students will remain active
listeners during instruction.
Small Group Activities:
The students will work in their designated groups to complete the activity. The students will utilize
Google Earth to locate key points described on the map. The students will set place marks on each of
these points. The students will print a copy for each student in their group upon completion. This
activity allows children to visual engage with an activity that is hands-on while also enabling the
students to verbally interact with their peers; appealing to many learning styles.
Whole Group Instruction of Independent Activities:
The teacher will explain to the students how to complete each map and research activity. The teacher
will provide examples of each. The teacher will keep the map projections displayed during the
entirety of the activity. The teacher will also inform the students that the information gathered from
the group activity can be used.

Independent Activities:
The Students will work independently to complete the map and research activity.
Map Coloring The Students will locate the 7 regions on the Regions Map and label each
with a black marker. The students will color each region a different color using crayons or
colored pencils. The students will then locate all the major waterways on the Waterways
Map and label them with a black marker. The students will color each waterway with a blue
crayon or colored pencil.
iPad research The Students will each use their classroom supplied iPad to do research via
Google about each region and civilization that has adapted to it. The students will fill in their
research chart with necessary information gathered.
The teacher will work alongside of students and provide assistance when needed.

Evaluate & Revise


Student Performance:
The students will be evaluated during the group activity on their knowledge of using Google Earth.
The students will be assessed on their ability to properly use place marks to identify the key points on
the map. Each student will be independently evaluated using a grading rubric as a guide. The
students abilities will be assessed based on their understanding and knowledge of reading maps by
having each map labeled and colored correctly. The students will also exhibit proficient knowledge
of civilizations adaptation to each region based on the information provided on the research chart.
Instructor Performance:
The students ability to perform each given task successfully, both in small group activity and in
independent activity, will provide adequate feedback regarding the instructions given by the teacher.
Media Performance:
Each form of media was used to actively engage students in different ways. If the students were able
to successfully complete the group activities and the independent activities, then the media used was
successful.
