First Grade Lesson Plan: Healthy Fruits

Specific Objective to meet Goals:


Students will be able to research and identify information about their 3 different fruits through
collaboration with classmates and online sources.
Students will be able to bring their research into an organized Microsoft Word document.
Students will be able to present their paper to the class.
Students will learn about nutrition and healthy eating habits.
Common Core Standard Grade 1:
With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and
publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of
keyboarding skills to type a minimum of two pages in a single sitting.(Production and Distribution of
Writing)
INTASC Standard #8: Instructional Strategies
The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to
encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their
connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.
Motivational Techniques: Upon completing project, all students will receive fruit salad. Explain to
students how it is important to maintain healthy eating habits.
Materials Needed: computers/Microsoft Word program, internet access, projector, projector screen,
writing utensils, note paper, fruits
Procedure for the Lesson:
-Students enter the classroom and take seats.
- An instruction handout and rubric are distributed to the students (1-2 minutes).

-Teacher describes how students are to complete assignment and shows her own example on projector
screen (10-15 minutes).
- Students split up into pairs to reflect and plan their individual 3 favorite fruits and why eating healthy
foods is important (15 minutes).
-Class takes a trip to computer lab. Teacher demonstrates how to make a google search/ find pictures/
find accurate information for facts about fruits (30 minutes).
-Students complete research while jotting down notes on their topics. Teacher provides assistance
when needed (45 minutes).
-Teacher introduces Microsoft Word and explains how to use the program (30 minutes).
-Students design an organized and aesthetically pleasing word document using the facts they gathered
from their research (120 minutes).
-Teacher edits and revises documents before final grading (60 minutes).
-Students present their findings to the class while enjoying fruit salad (90 minutes).

Assessment Methods
Teacher grades and evaluates papers and presentations. Did students follow the rubric? Do they have a
clear understanding of fruits and nutrition? Did they make a thorough presentation?
