A carpenter is considered a person who is skilled in constructing objects and

building with wood. Carpenters are people who know the materials they use very well
and are very skilled with using any type of tools. Knowing how to read a blueprint,
build, assemble, install and repair structures and fixtures that are made of wood is pretty
much everything you need to know to be a carpenter. (C. James) The career overview is
one of the main things that are needed to know.
First of all, the career overview for anybody that is becoming a carpenter is very
important. Carpenters construct, erect, install and repair structures made from wood and
other materials. Carpenters are involved in many different kinds of construction, from the
building of highways and bridges to the installation of kitchen cabinets. (Occupational
Outlook Handbook) Carpenters work throughout the construction industry. They are the
largest group of the building trades workers. They saw, shape, and fasten wood to build
houses and other buildings. Carpenters also build cabinets, doors, and other objects made
of wood. Their work places are usually construction sites, inside buildings, in factories,
and in small wood working shops. Most carpenters are hired by contractors or builders. A
carpenter has certain education and training requirements but does not have to have a
high school diploma although one is preferred. The best way to become a carpenter is to
complete a contractor apprenticeship program. A formal apprenticeship program takes
three to four years to complete.

Becoming a carpenter is no easy task. There are many qualifications to become a

carpenter. Working within precise standards of accuracy, rate information using standards
which can be measured or checked, compared differences in size/shape/form of
lines/figures/objects, and following oral and written directions, plans, and blueprints are
just a few of the things a person must possess to be a carpenter. On average, a carpenter
works about forty hours a week. Carpenters get paid twelve to thirty-four dollars an hour.
Entry wages for someone in carpentry is about $14.94, which comes out to about $31,080
a year. For median wage, its about $19.79 and that is about $41,170 a year. Experienced
wage is about $26.14 and $54,360 a year. Employers are more likely to offer higher
wages to graduates of formal vocational education programs. For training, carpenters
begin as a carpenters helper, assisting skilled carpenters in order to master skills and
craftsmanship through observation and practice.
NARI is a professional organization associated with carpentry. The NARIs
certification program recognizes the skills and achievements of nine distinct groups of
remodeling professionals of particular interests to homeowners. The group that I would
fit into would be a Universal Design Certified Professional (UDCP). A UDCP is an
experienced remodeler with skills and knowledge in all aspects of universal design and
remodeling. To become a UDCP you must meet all of the following: Be primarily
engaged in remodeling, have at least two years continuous full-time experience in the
remodeling industry, stick to the NARIs standards of practice and code of ethics,
complete eight hours of continuous education, complete an application that shows your

background and experience, complete a written exam, and submit all required application
materials and fees. Construction is a very popular occupation. It can be found all over the
world. Therefore, you can find employment almost anywhere. The average growth rate
for all occupations in construction is 24%, which is must faster than normal. To get a job
in construction, you first need to determine the position in the construction industry that
you would like to enter, pursue the training and education for your ideal position, seek
additional training, and find and apply for construction jobs using all of your available
resources. General construction workers can advance as they gain training and
experience. They may also receive on-the-job training and advance to more skilled
positions. General construction workers usually get promoted to supervisor. A
brickmason, blockmason, and stonemason are similar occupations as a carpenter. They all
build structures and fixtures but they all build them with different materials.
Carpentry is a job of many skills, from a simple frame all the way to a master
piece. Carpentry is one of the oldest forms of work and over time it will get even better
and better. The time and effort a person takes when learning this skill really shows how
much people want to learn the ancient tradition of carpentry. Carpentry is sure to become
better over time!
