Students enter an amount of paper or plastic they
use and they can see how many trees they can save

surround with materials

Show students examples of materials that have

been gathered and donated

Students will brainstorm other materials that they

could use for this project

Thinking-aloud
Options: ground rules,
modeling inquiry, learning to
work with groups

Show TEDxGrandRapids-Innovate: Scrap

Metal with Stuart Padnos

Students will turn and talk:

Discuss video-what did he discuss? Why is it
important? What ideas does it give you for a
project?
Students will navigate Padnos website to
explore more options and ideas

Stage
Investigate
Modeling: how to read, how to
listen, how to view with a
question in mind
Modeling: taking notes,
keeping track of learning

Discussion & Debates

Students continue to develop

questions

Teacher Role

Field trip and tour to Padnos Recycling

Center in Holland
When students return, teacher will have a
prompt for them to write a journal

Introduce Heidelberg Project

Read Magic Trash by J. Shapiro

Prize?

Individually students should think about what they

want to accomplish while creating their sculpture.

Search and research for ideas by looking at artists

websites:

sculpture ideas?

During field trip, students will use sticky notes and

write key words/notes that they think will help them
for ideas for their projects.
Writing prompt: what did you think about Padnos
Recycling Center? What was your favorite thing
about it? Explain why.

Students will get into table groups and discuss any

ideas and sketches that they have for their sculpturepeer feedback is essential for this step

draw conclusions
Help students determine what
is important to the task
synthesize information

Teacher Role
Teacher will meet with students to hear
proposals and suggest ideas to help improve
Is the task able to be done?
Teacher will model and teach how to create a
wordle from their proposal-students will write
their proposal up, then type their proposal into
wordle and create the wordle from their
proposal

Wordle with sketch/proposal

Students will write their proposals into wordle
and also add their sketch for the sculpture-they
will use the tool to see what the most important
parts of their sculpture are. This, along with their
proposal, sketch, and mock-up will be submitted
to the teacher and Padnos.
Students will think of materials and things needed
for their sculpture projects
Begin creating mock-up
Students must be sure to include what materials
would be used on larger scale sculpture.-be
organized

Modeling organization and

evaluating information

Help students connect new

learning to curriculum & task

Student Role

Teacher will question students what they have

learned so far: would they be able to teach a
Kindergarten anything about recycling or
making art from scraps?

Students will visit a Kindergarten class and explain
