Lesson Development:
Prior to class:
Step 1: Get a basket.
Step 2: On small pieces of paper, have action verbs written
on each one.
Step 3: Put the pieces of paper in the basket.
Step 4: Make sure that the song A-Tisket A-Tasket by Ella
Fitzgerald is available to use in class for the introduction.
In Class:
Step 1: Introduction Greet class and have them come
together and sit in a circle. Explain to them what they are to
do with the basket and slips of paper.
Step 2: Play the game explained in the introduction.
Step 3: Explain to class what action verbs are. Action verbs
are verbs that describe what the subject of a sentence is
doing.
Step 4: Come up with sentences together as a class on the
board. (If time prohibits this, have sentences of your own
ready).
Step 5: Then, ask the students to come up to the board and
underline the action verbs in the sentence.
Step 6: Review the definition of action verbs.
Step 7: Go into Closure.

circle. Each student has to think of an action verb that starts

with the same letter as their name. The person does the action
and yells out the action and their name. The rest of the class
repeats it. Here is the twist, the next student has to say the
previous students actions and names and then do their own.
This will help enhance the students memory and keep them
paying attention. Duplicate verbs are not allowed. If a student
is stuck, come back to them later or ask class to help.
