RED ASH (Bing)

Recycled Concrete Additive
Background

Ash Bings are derived from the extraction of oil shale which was subsequently exposed to
intense heat to allow the extraction of oil from the shale. The residual product from this
process was placed into large spoil heaps (known as Bings) and continued to burn for
years creating a unique red ash, considered a lightweight product.

Quantity

The total Bing available is approximately 7,500,000m or 13.3 megatonnes (Mt)

Testing - Grading

Independently tested by Armcon at their UK laboratory, noting in a privileged report that

it was a good product mix with the fines and the 20mm size aggregate used as a straight
additive in the concrete making process without the need to use any sand and aggregate.
The report also noted the use Bing reduced the cement content required in the mix.

Testing carried out according to UNE EN1097-5 by the Department of Construction in

Barcelona in 2013 resulted in certification as a cement additive.
Further review and research into its use and application is being carried out at Dundee
University, Concrete Technology unit.
Stanger Testing Services 2009-2011; testing was carried out according to:

BS 812: Part 124: 1989

BS EN 932-1: 1997
BS EN 1097-6: 2000
BS EN 1097-1: 1996 (West Condition)
BS 1377: Part 4: 1990
BS 1377-Part 7: 1990: Clause 5 (procedure5.5.4)
BS 1377: Part 2, 3 & 4: 1990

Analysis includes the results detailed in appendix I.
