Feminism (The F-Word)
I chose a YouTube video by Laci Green called The F Word which the genre is video,
the video talks about how judgmental society is about feminism. And mostly because society
doesnt actually know what the true definition of feminism is. People just think we are angry,
crazy women who dont shave their armpits and all of those myths. Feminism are people who
want gender equality.
Media has had a huge impact on feminism, and it is one of the reasons feminism has such
a bad name. In the video its shows a clip of a man talking about the typical image of a feminist.
He states that a womens studies professor is usually fat and unattractive, which is completely
untrue because my womens study professor is neither of the two. A common myth about
feminism is that women hate men, but that is entirely untrue. It has nothing to do with hating
men, it has to do with hating sexism, and myths like this are some of the reasons people are
scared to call themselves feminist.
A lot of people like to say Im not a feminist, but Im a humanist. Humanist are
completely different, they believe in alleviating each others suffering and not through religion or
natural powers to do it for us. As Laci says in the video that when you say youre a humanist and
not a feminist it erases the whole gender equality issue and therefore the two are complete

different. Another myth is that feminism has nothing to do with men, but it can also affect men
just as much as it does women; we mostly focus on women issues because it is mostly women
who are hurt my sexism.
The Genre of this video would be more of a personal blog, even though she is giving
facts she is also stating her opinion. Laci tries to reach out to individual who either are already
aware of the subject of feminism or are just wanting to know more about the subject. She also
tries to catch the viewers attention to help spread awareness and do her part in trying to make a
change. This video connects with the group of feminism because it is giving information about
the subject for the viewer. .

Valenti, Jessica. Full Frontal Feminism: A Young Woman's Guide to Why Feminism Matters.
Emeryville, CA: Seal, 2007. Print.
Full Frontal Feminism
I chose the book Full Frontal Feminism by Jessica Valenti, I decided to write about the second
chapter and it was mostly about what being a feminist truly is and so different issues and myths
that she addresses.
In the second chapter it talks about how society pushes abstinence so heavily on
teenagers, and how if youre not married and have sex you are a whore. Religion and society has
pushed this down young girls throats for so long, in one section it compares you virginity to a
lollipop your body is a wrapped lollipop. When you have sex with a man, he unwraps your
lollipop and sucks on it. It may feel great at the time, but unfortunately when hes done with you,
all you have left for your next partner is a poorly wrapped, saliva-fouled sucker.(Valinti Page

25) Which is why we are supposedly supposed to keep our virginity, because we arent as special
and it unattractive for us to lose it. When talking about the subject of abstinence education and
how they dont try to teach you how to be responsible and have safe sex, they just tell you dont
do it and contraception doesnt work condoms dont protect you from pregnancy or STDs or
HIV, but they can cause cancer.(Valenti Page.22) It even goes on to talk about in some states
you can be reported to the abuse hotline if your under age for consent and are having sex when
youre not married.
This is a GENRE purpose of this chapter is to inform about the well know subject of
purity and sex, and how feminist view the subject. Which is why the reading ties in well with the
subject of feminism. The book is more opinionated so it is less of actual facts and more about
Valentis view of the subject. But she does tie in some factual examples to back up the reason
she said certain things, and it is that way all throughout the book. Her audience she is trying to
reach in this book is younger women who may be discovering that they are a feminist or just
girls wanting to know more about the subject. You can tell her audience is younger women
because the way it is written, she writes where it is easy to understand and her writing is more
current making it easier for teens to read and relate to.

A Silent Birth: A Feminist Perspective
Stillbirth or Sudden intrauterine death is when a baby who shows no signs of like at 24
weeks or after. Because of being so far along women have to go through labor and have their
baby, knowing their babys fate as they go through the hours of pain and labor. 110 pregnancys

end in still birth but it isnt acknowledged as a public health issue. In the article it talks about the
feminist view of this issue, even though this is such a traumatic government doesnt give it the
attention it needs. It is hard on both the mother and father, in the article it gives a quote from a
mother who gave birth to a stillborn I called the vital records office after my baby died. I
wanted her birth certificate. They told me I couldnt have one and that I didnt have a real baby.
But she was real to me. She was almost ten pounds and the autopsy could not find a cause of
death. She was and will always be my childIve never been so offended. Being a feminist is
fighting for gender equality and for our rights. It talks about how depressed majority of mothers
and fathers become after giving birth but they arent allowed a funeral or birth certificate in
memory of their babys. So it started out with a mothers support group from Arizona, testing the
law and they made a change. Since Arizonas passage of legislation happened twenty other states
have passed the law allowing mothers to receive birth certificates for their stillborn babys.
The genre is an educational article and it is meant to inform readers on the issue of
stillbirth but from a feminist prospective. So it is giving you an example of how feminist deal
with different situation, which is why it connected to my topic very well. The article is affective
of giving its point across, it is very formal and gives the needed information to understand the
concept and it also ties the two topics of feminism and stillborn birth together very well. The
article is talking about activism through feminism instead of the history or facts about what
feminism actually is, so that is how this article differs from my others. I think there choice of
putting the information into an educational article is the best choice because it is a serious topic
and it isnt really a story so making it into an article was the right choice.

Dreamworlds 3: Desire, Sex & Power in Music Video
This video talks about how media is so degrading of female bodies. Media portrays
women in a sexual way to almost sell anything, but especially in music videos. Just think about it
almost in every type of music there is a half-naked girl or a girl being sexual in it. The video
talks about how there videos shape how we act and what we think is acceptable whether you
realize it or not. Men have created this dream world of how women are supposed to look and act,
the videos do one of many things to the girls, either putting them in the background, taking off
close, having multiple girls on one guy and also making girls seem like they are always desiring
sex; and women have created a body image and how you are supposed to act for society to find
you sexy.
Basically it is making the world connect the word female with sexual things. Media
shows women how men want to see them, which is very unrealistic, they make it to seem that
women are hopeless and lost without men, and all they can do is lay in bed and cry until a man
comes and picks them off their feet. Nowhere in videos does it show how strong and independent
women are and what they actually dress like and act. This dream world leads men to treat actual
women how they do in these videos, which is harassing and disrespectful and women in the real
world dont enjoy it like they make the girls in the videos. This kind of taught behavior leads
to women being stalked, raped. One in six women are sexually assaulted every year in America

This source was an educational film by Media Education Foundation. The point of the
video is to have young women and just society in general to become more aware of the harm that
media does to our mind and our culture. It is trying help people realize how the real world
actually is and how the dream world media creates. The audience is mainly women but I can
be for anyone because it is educating on the effects of media, which I think they do a great job
with, we are so used to seeing women being portrayed as sexual it is just normal to us. I found
this video on a women studies database, in other words (feminist database). The topic of media is
huge with feminism and is debated rapidly how media uses womens bodys to sell things , and
this video is a perfect example of how major of a problem it actually is. This source is different
from the others because it is talking about one issue only and giving a feminist view on it and
telling how feminist see the media.

West Side School for the Desperate. "Mindy Nettifee - For Young Women Who Don't Consider
Themselves Feminists (The Last Nerve)." YouTube. YouTube, n.d. Web. 03 Oct. 2014.
For Young Women Who Dont Consider Themselves a Feminist
I chose a video of spoken poem by Mindy Nettifee, she talks about how women chose to
not identify themselves as feminist but have all of the beliefs the feminism is. Mindy states
saying youre not a feminist is like saying I dont like having the right to vote, or Im okay with
men being sexually assaulting to my body and its cool if my body is property and I dont care
about receiving an education. Its pretty much saying you dont care about your rights because
what the definition of feminism is gender equality.

Its like saying youre okay with the women in the world who have no freedom to own a
house, or drive a car or even walk down the street. Women are so quick to say they arent
feminist but have no idea what it really means to be one, and Mindy addresses that using
examples of what feminist believe in in the form of poetry witch is extremely powerful.
The genre of this source would be spoken poetry, even though I also got this video from
YouTube it is completely different. In this video Mindy makes viewer aware of feminism but by
a different approach she gives a powerful message through a poem unlike my other video from
Green, where she is just talking about the issue in form of a personal blog. The viewers the video
is meant for would be women who dont identify themselves as feminist, it is meant to educate
the true meaning of feminism. I think it does do this but a little bit more in an intimidating way
because she put the statement out there that if you say I wouldnt say I am a feminist you just
sound like an idiot. I think the choice of putting the information into a spoken form does make it
more powerful and suiting because then it is okay to put your opinion in it and to speak what you
truly feel.

Reflection
My process of finding my sources wasnt that hard, since I already knew some about the
topic and already knew about some sources that was what I used. But I did have a lot of video
sources that I wanted to use so it was a little difficult describing exactly what made them
different. But being able to pick the topic and because I liked my topic it made this project more
enjoyable for me. I really enjoy being able to pick my own topic. I thought the hardest part was
actually analyzing the source correctly. Just writing about what I read or saw was the easy part,

because I understood everything, but having to interpret what the readers purpose was, what
viewers they are trying to reach was a little more difficult. I also found it hard to describe the
genre sometimes, especially some sources more than others, when you are reading my paper it
would be nice to have more feedback on things like, if my writing is easy to understand and if
someone can actually learn from what I wrote. Also am I analyzing the source correct or am I
just rambling about something that doesnt even make sense. Also are my genera correct and do
they really give you a good idea on feminism.
