40 minutes given to complete.
LAFS.1.RI.1.2
Identify the main topic and retell key details of the text.
Students will pick a book determined by their A.R level chosen by
teacher. Along with a main topic worksheet given by teacher with a
sharpened pencil.
Teacher will hold up 3 different types of books to the class, and
explain to students how the title can be a clue to find the main idea.

asks the class what the main topic might be from that book.
Teacher will then write a sentence on the board and draw a
picture about the book to show the class.
2. After the teacher explains what to do she will instruct the
students to go to their assigned A.R level group.
3. Students will pick a book out of the selected ones the teacher
handpicked for that specific reading level.
3. Read book quietly together with your group.
4. When finished raise your hand and your teacher will give you
a main topic worksheet to fill out.
5. By yourself, write one sentence that you think the main topic
is, and then draw a picture of your topic.
6. Turn in worksheet to teacher.
Teacher will demonstrate the instructions and split the students up
into their A.R level groups, where they will read and discuss in their
