Warm-Up

Write 3 complete sentences relating the terms

Valence Electrons, Octet Rule, Stable, Lewis
Dot Structure.

Wed. 10/29 & Thurs. 10/30

Objective (Learning Target) - I will design an experiment with a
repeatable procedure utilizing the Scientific Method by completing a
lab demonstrating properties of water.
Success Criteria: I have completed an experiment using a repeatable
procedure that I have designed and gathered sound data which I can
discuss in my lab report.

Homework:

Agenda:
1. Questions about properties of
water worksheet?
2. Scientific Method Concept Map
3. You ARE a scientist, experiment
away!

Complete Properties of Water Lab

Report; Bring draft on Monday; Lab due
Wednesday (1,3) Thurs (7) Friday (6)

Due:
Water properties worksheet

Quote of the Day

The scientist is not a person who gives the

right answers, he is one who asks the right

questions.

Scientific Method Concept Map

Work individually, then with your table group
to complete the concept map demonstrating
the process involved in the Scientific Method.

In Your Own Words...

On the back of your concept map answer each
question in a complete sentence.
1. What is an independent variable?
1. What is a dependent variable?

1. What is a control variable?

Vocabulary
Independent Variable An independent variable is the variable you have control over, what you can
choose and manipulate. It is usually what you think will affect the dependent
variable.
Dependent Variable A dependent variable is what you measure in the experiment and what is
affected during the experiment. The dependent variable responds to the
independent variable.
Control Variable A control variable is what is kept constant. It is never changed. It is what the
scientist uses for comparison against the dependent variable.

Example
A scientist studies the impact of a drug on cancer.

Independent variables - administration of the drug, the

dosage and the timing.
Dependent variable - the impact the drug has on cancer.
Control variable - A patient with cancer not being
administered the drug.

Experimental Design
With your group, design an experiment investigating a
property of water with the materials provided. Before you
begin your experiment you must:
1. Form a hypothesis (prediction)
1. Develop a procedure (ask yourself Can this be
repeated?)

Experimental Design
During your experiment:
1. Is our procedure working? Does your group need to
revise it?
1. Gather data (observations, numerical data, etc.)

Experimental Design
Once your group has finished experimenting:
1. What can your group conclude about the experiment
using the data gathered? (evidence needs to support
conclusion)
2. What errors were observed?
3. Discuss with your group and ensure your data is
complete. You will be completing a lab report
individually.

Lab Report
You all have been given a rubric for your lab write up:
Ensure you are following the rubric, this is your success criteria
for completing the lab report.
An exemplar (an example of a complete lab write up) has been
posted on BlackBoard. Consult the exemplar if you are having
troubles.
Ask questions!

Cool Down
You are to design an experiment to determine which kind
of light I need to provide my house plant; natural, red, or
blue. What are the independent variables? Dependent
variables? Control variables?
Ticket out the Door (yes, this is the only way to get out of the room is
with this ticket!)- What do you find most difficult to complete in a
lab report? Why?
